Men's Soccer Streaks to Four Straight Wins with 3-2 Victory over St. Joseph's Brooklyn

The Maritime College men's soccer team pushed its win streak to four games after a 3-2 win over Skyline Conference foe St. Joseph's Brooklyn. The Privateers improved to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play with the victory.

Joseph Gino (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) got Maritime on the board in the 26th minute off a beautiful pass from Andrew Higgins (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey). Higgins squeezed the ball between two defenders and allowed Gino to beat the goalie on the left hand side. The goal was Gino's fourth of the season and Higgins' second assist.

The Bears responded with a flurry of offense to close the half. They recorded four shots and three corner kicks in the closing minutes of the opening frame, but the Privateers defense held strong and kept them off the board.

Maritime regained the momentum early in the second half as Christopher Tavernese (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) netted his ninth goal of the season to give the Privateers a 2-0 lead. Tavernese dribbled past a defender and beat the keeper on the right hand side for an unassisted goal.

Once again, the Bears offense responded to a Privateers goal, but this time they were able to find the back of the net and bring it to a one-score game.

Five minutes later, the Maritime offense looked to put the game out of reach as Thomas Kropp (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) scored his first goal of the season by hitting a chip shot over the goalie's head. The 80th minute goal appeared to put the game away, but the Bears took advantage of a relaxed Privateers defense and answered with their second goal of the game just two minutes later.

Maritime buckled down in the closing minutes of the game and didn't allow another shot as they closed out the 3-2 win. The conference win moved the Privateers to first overall in the conference with 12 points.

The Privateers were out shot in the contest 12-7, but all three shots on goal found the back of the net, while Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) came up with the only save of the game. St. Joseph's Brooklyn also held the advantage in corner kicks, but the Maritime offense showed its ability to take advantage of the few chances they had.

The Privateers get back on the field Wednesday, Oct. 10 for a huge Skyline matchup against Mount Saint Mary at 7:30 p.m. The Knights are currently in second place in the conference at 3-0-1 and 10 points.
