Women's Soccer Ties Old Westbury 1-1

On Saturday, the Maritime Women's Soccer team took to the road to face off against the Old Westbury Panthers. The Privateers and Panthers both entered today's game 1-4 in Skyline Conference competition. Led by a prolific defensive performance, the Privateers recorded their first tie of the season by a score of 1-1.

In a game that went 75 plus minutes scoreless, two overtimes were not enough time to determine a winner. In the 77th minute, the Panthers connected in the box to take the 1-0 lead. The Privateers lone goal came on a total of 22 shot attempts. Along with 10 saves by Maritime's all-time leading goal saver, Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough), the Privateers defense controlled the cavalcade of drives made by the Panthers. The defensive group of the Privateers recorded a key first period blocked shot to keep the game scoreless. The Privateers were also key in preventing any scoring chances in the seven corner kicks taken by the Panthers.

After allowing their first goal of the day, Maritime did not wait long to respond to Old Westbury. In the 82nd minute, the Privateers turned to a familiar face from all season long in Brianna Etienne (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City). In the Privateers lone shot attempt of the period, the freshman Etienne hit net to put the Privateers back to even with the Panthers. The Etienne drive and shot in the box was her sixth goal on the 2018 season.

In net, Maritime received the type of performance they are now accustomed to from the senior Havens.  Havens 10 saves were instrumental in keeping the defensive momentum on the side of the Privateers. Havens performance included seven consecutive saves in regulation as well as three key saves to keep the Panthers off the board in overtime.

Skyline Conference play continues for the Privateers, as they will visit Mount St. Mary on Tuesday night. Following the game against the Knights, the Privateers will return to home for their final two regular season games of the season. On October 20th the Privateers will host Purchase and then on October 24th, the Privateers will host St. Joseph's.
