Eastwood’s Double-Overtime Goal Leads Maritime to 3-0 Record

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime men's soccer team improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2009 as freshman Jerome Eastwood (Houston, Texas/Stratford) scored 45 seconds into the second overtime period to give the Privateers a 3-2 victory over the John Jay Bloodhounds on Wednesday evening.

The goal was the first career marker for Eastwood, who drove the ball into the goal on a scramble in front of the net off of a kick from junior Parker Gallt (Las Vegas, Nev./Plainfield South (Ill.)). Freshman Neil Dillon (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park) scored the opening goal for the Privateers while sophomore Aleks Olthoff-Cusumano (Eastport, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) notched his second goal of the season in the win.

Sophomore Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) stopped three shots and played the full 100:45 of the match as he recorded his third win of the campaign.

John Jay got on the board first with a goal in the 34th minute off of a move around a Maritime defender that was just beyond the reach of a leaping Rodriguez as the Bloodhounds moved ahead by a 1-0 score.

Maritime kicked its offense into gear following the John Jay goal as Maritime took two shots, before Dillon evened the match in the 39th minute off of a quick pass in front of the goal from classmate Anthony Palazzolo (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman). The score remained locked at one heading into the halftime break.

In the second half Maritime got the lead off of a strong cross off the foot of senior Harry Colucci (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandenmeulen), which was deflected by Palazzolo and found Olthoff-Cusumano, who buried the shot to give the Privateers their first lead of the game at 2-1.

With time working against John Jay, the Bloodhounds were able to find the back of the net with just over five minutes remaining in regulation to even the game at two apiece. The Privateers had one chance out in front of the net off of a corner, but the Bloodhound defense blocked the shot and kept the game even at the end of regulation.

Neither side was able to break through in the first overtime session, but it was just 45 seconds into the second overtime period that gave the Privateers the win as Eastwood notched the game-winner off the pass from Gallt.

The Privateers held a large lead in shots at a 24-11 margin, but only led 6-5 in terms of shots on goal. Corner kicks were also in favor of Maritime at a 9-6 difference.

Maritime (3-0) will be back at home again on Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m., when the Privateers host the Maine Maritime Mariners on Reinhart Field. Following the Privateers and the Mariners, Sarah Lawrence and St. John Fisher will meet with kickoff slated for 3 p.m.
