THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime women's soccer team opened up its 2017 season with a loss at home on Reinhart Field, falling to the John Jay Bloodhounds by a 2-0 score on Monday afternoon.
Maritime was led by a pair of freshman with a pair of shots on goal as
Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) and
Nikki DellaSperanza (Huntington, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) were denied on both of their respective chances. Classmate
Lexie Gula (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) recorded one shot on goal and two shots overall on the day.
In goal, junior
Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough) made four saves through 90 minutes of play as she yielded the two Bloodhound goals.
The first two shots of the game came off the foot of DellaSperanza as Maritime controlled much of the early play. John Jay got on the board in the 42nd minute as the Bloodhounds broke the deadlock at the 41:12 mark of the opening half.
In the second half the Privateers were awarded two early corner kicks, before Wright rattled off her two shots in the 75th and 77th minutes but with no success. John Jay added an insurance goal with exactly six minutes to go as the Bloodhounds played out the final minutes of the match.
Final stats saw John Jay lead in shots by a 13-7 margin, while corner kicks were even at two apiece. John Jay made five saves on the day, while Havens stopped all four shots put on target in the opening half.
Maritime (0-1) will return to the field on Wednesday evening, when the Privateers host the Lehman Lightning at 5:00 p.m. on Reinhart Field.
John Jay (2-0) will play on the road on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as the Bloodhounds travel to take on Cedar Crest in Allentown, Pa.
