Women’s Soccer Scores Third-Straight Win vs. City College of New York

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime women's soccer team trailed 1-0 after the first half of play, but used a four-goal second half to earn a 4-1 victory over the City College of New York Beavers on Monday evening on Reinhart Field.

Maritime was once again led by senior Julianna Avitto (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), who scored three of Maritime's four goals on the game. The Privateers also got a penalty kick goal from freshman Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) in the win. Two of Avitto's goals came off of passes as freshmen Ashley Giorgio (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and Caitlin Etienne (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) both recorded their second assists of the season.

In goal, junior Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough) made 11 saves as she picked up her third win of the season for the Privateers.

City College of New York controlled much of the opening period and held an 11-2 advantage in terms of shots through the opening 45 minutes. The Beavers scored with just 1:18 left in the opening period to score the first goal of the match.

After the halftime break Maritime picked up the tempo with Avitto scoring her first goal of the night in the 55th minute of play to even the score at one. Less than two minutes later Giorgio sent a long lead pass ahead that was corralled by Avitto and driven into the goal to put the Privateers ahead on the scoreboard by a 2-1 margin.

With less than 10 minutes to go the Beavers were called for a penalty in the box and Wright was awarded a penalty kick. She chose to shoot the ball to the right, and guessed correctly as her third goal of the season gave Maritime a 3-1 advantage.

The Privateers got in the board one more time in the 86th minute of play as Etienne sent a cross into the box from the right wing that was headed into the goal by Avitto as she capped off the three-goal performance.

The three goals was a career-high for Avitto after having scored two goals on five occasions in her career, including twice earlier this season.

Maritime (3-1-1, 1-0-0 Skyline) will resume non-conference play on Saturday, when the team faces off against former Skyline Conference foe Manhattanville. The opening kick is slated for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

City College of New York (2-2-1, 0-0-1 CUNYAC) will resume conference play on Wednesday, when the team hosts Lehman at 4 p.m. on Randall's Island.
