Privateers Use 48-Kill Effort to Drive Past Mass. Maritime in Four Sets

CASTINE, Maine – The Maritime volleyball team picked up a win on Sunday afternoon at the Chase Smith Gymnasium with the Privateers scoring a four-set win over the Mass. Maritime Buccaneers by a 3-1 score.
 
Maritime scored 25 in each of their four sets, picking up victories in the opening two sets by the scores of 25-18 and 25-20. The Privateers went beyond the distance in the third set but fell by the score of 25-27. After dropping the third the Privateers stormed back and won the fourth set with ease by a 25-13 score.
 
Senior Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) was named to the All-Tournament Team following her performances on the weekend, highlighted by her double-double against Mass. Maritime as she recorded a team-high 16 kills and also picked up 10 digs.
 
Senior Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) tallied a double-double as well with a dozen kills and 14 digs with one service ace. Junior Meredith Hayes (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) had the team's only two blocks of the match to go along with a 10 kills, which was the for Hayes most since the season opener against York on September 5.
 
Freshman Abby Steele (Crossville, Tenn./Stone Memorial) tied a season high with six kills and also recorded a season-best 11 digs on the match. Fellow freshman Abby Solomos (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) led the defensive efforts with a season-high 20 digs and also notched one service ace. Rookie Erika Kirchner (Meadowmere Park, N.Y./Lawrence) set another season high with 39 assists to help the Privateers to the victory while also chipping in with a season-high four kills.
 
Maritime (6-4) returns to New York on Wednesday to resume Skyline Conference play at Sarah Lawrence from the Campbell Sports Center in Bronxville, N.Y. with opening service at 7 p.m.
 
Mass. Maritime (1-9) will continue it's road-heavy September with a trip to Becker on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in Leicester, Mass.
