MORRISTOWN, N.J. – The Maritime women's soccer team needed double overtime to edge the Saint Elizabeth Eagles on Saturday afternoon by the score of 2-1.
Senior
Julianna Avitto (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) scored both goals for the Privateers to help the team to their second win of the season. Freshman
Caitlin Etienne (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) picked up the assist on the game-winner in overtime.
Defensively junior
Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough) led the defense with five saves to earn the victory.
Avitto scored just 2:32 into the opening half as she drove the ball into the net on a scramble in front of the goal. Later in the half Saint Elizabeth scored in the 38th minute to tie the game at one.
Stats through the first half saw Maritime hold a 12-5 shot advantage and a 4-1 difference in corner kicks for the Privateers.
Maritime controlled much of the play in the second half, but were unable to score as the Privateers led 11-5 in shots through the half. Both sides recorded one shot apiece in the first overtime period as the game remained tied.
The Privateers needed just 4:23 of the second overtime to break the tie as Avitto collected the rebound off of Etienne's initial shot that was saved by the Eagle goalkeeper.
Maritime (2-1-1, 1-0-0 Skyline) will return to Reinhart Field on Monday afternoon, when the team takes on the City College of New York Beavers beginning at 5 p.m.
Saint Elizabeth (0-4-1) will be on the road for its next game as the Eagles will open up NEAC play against Penn-State Berks next Saturday beginning at 3:00 p.m.
