THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime women's soccer team hosted the Yeshiva Maccabees on Wednesday evening and knocked off its Skyline Conference foe by the score of 6-0 on Reinhart Field.
Maritime was led by senior
Julianna Avitto (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), who had two goals and two assists for a career-high eight points. It was also Avitto's first game with multiple assists since September 10, 2014, when she had two assists at York (N.Y.). Also recording multiple points was freshman
Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip), who registered the first two goals of her career. Fellow freshmen
Lexie Gula (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) and Mackenzie Fabiani also recorded the first goals of their career in the win.
Defensively Maritime was led by junior goalkeeper
Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough), who stopped two shots to earn the shutout victory. The defensive unit also helped with the effort as the unit of Wright, senior
Olivia Mihaljevich (Leona Valley, Calif./Quartz Hill), sophomore
Leigh Kouril (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) and freshman
Ashley Giorgio (Islip, N.Y./Islip) held the Maccabees to just three shots on the night.
Neither side was able to get on the board through the first 35 minutes of the match despite Maritime dominating the offensive chances as the Privateers held an 11-0 lead in shots through the opening stages of the match
A pass from Avitto went to Wright in the 36th minute, and the freshman buried the ball in the back of the net to give Maritime its first lead of the game. Just minutes later Avitto scored her first of the season off of a corner kick after Fabiani sent the ball into the box. The Privateers scored once more in the waning minutes of the period as Fabiani was slotted a ball down the middle of the field from Avitto to increase the Maritime lead to three.
After the halftime break the Privateers got on the board just 63 seconds into the half as Avitto netted her second of the night on an unassisted play to give Maritime a 4-0 lead. The Privateers continued to keep up the pressure and scored again in the 73rd minute as freshman
Lexie Gula (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) was fed a ball by Giorgio into the box and into the goal to increase the lead to five.
Maritime finished off the scoring with a goal in the 89th minute of play as Wright recorded her second goal of the night at 88:12 on a deep shot from distance. The final horn sounded as Maritime picked up its first win of the young season.
Final stats saw lead 38-3 in shots, while also holding a 9-1 lead in corner kicks. Maritime had two total saves by Havens, while the Maccabees had 12 combined saves between their two goalkeepers and one team save.
