Privateers take Opener from St. Joseph’s (Bklyn), Game Two Postponed for Rain

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Despite the dreary conditions throughout the tri-state area, the Maritime baseball team was able to get one game in against the St. Joseph's (Bklyn) Bears on Saturday afternoon at the American Legion Fields in South Brooklyn, as the Privateers won by an 11-5 score. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed due to rain.

Maritime was led offensively by three players, who each had three RBIs on the afternoon. Sophomore Matt Costleigh (West Islip, N.Y./St. Anthony's) had a team-high four hits and three runs scored as he drove in a three. Junior Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) added a pair of hits as he drove in three and also scored two runs. Senior Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) was the third Privateer to register three RBIs as he was 2-for-5 on the day with one run score.

Juniors Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) and Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) each had one RBI apiece, as both also scored a run on the game. Freshman Antonio Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) recorded one hit and scored two runs, while senior Chris Stewart (Bethpage, N.Y./Chaminade) got the start and walked twice. Freshman Phil Russo (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) also reached base with one hit on the afternoon, while junior Connor Alwan (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) walked once and scored a run.

On the hill freshman Travis Bruinsma (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) started and tossed 6 2/3 innings as he scattered 10 hits and allowed four runs while striking out three. Freshman Luciano Besh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Franklin Regional) was next and allowed one run over his one-third of an inning, while sophomore Alex Poliwoda (Southold, N.Y./Southold) pitched two innings and allowed one hit as he sealed the win for the Privateers.

Costleigh opened the game with a bang as he picked up his second home run as a Privateer to put Maritime on top, 1-0. The Privateers got two more runners on in the first inning, but had to settle for just the one run as the game moved ahead to the bottom of the inning.

Bruinsma yielded a run in the bottom of the first inning, but Maritime answered right back in the top of the second as Schiavoni slugged a solo home run to lead off the frame. The Privateers loaded the bases but again were unable to connect on the key hit to take a large lead. St. Joseph's (Bklyn) scored another single run in the bottom of the second to even the score once again.

In the top of the fourth Diaz opened the inning with a bunt single and moved up on a ground out. Costleigh singled to put runner on the corners before Deddo brought Diaz home with a sacrifice fly. Semler singled up the middle to plate Costleigh before McLaughlin launched his 10th career home run to move into a second place tie on the all-time home runs list. Following the home run, Maritime took a 6-2 lead.

Bruinsma settled into a groove over the next few innings despite allowing two hits in the fourth and one in the fifth.

In the top of the sixth, Costleigh reached on a one out walk before Deddo singled to put runners on the corners. Semler tripled to plate a pair, and later came in on a McLaughlin single up the middle to increase the Privateer lead to 9-2.

Bruinsma cruised through the sixth, but left with two outs in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of runners on base. Besh allowed a double to the first batter he faced allowing two runs to score as the Bears trimmed the deficit to 9-4.

In the top of the ninth, the Privateers put the game out of reach with two more runs as Alwan walked and stole second. Diaz reached on an error, before Stewart walked to load the bases. Costleigh drove in two more runs with a two-run single to give the Privateers a six-run lead after St. Joseph's (Bklyn) got one run back in the bottom of the eighth.

Poliwoda allowed a one-out walk in the bottom of the ninth but got the next two batters to register another win for the Privateers in conference play.

Game two was postponed due to rain and will be made up at a date.
