BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Maritime baseball team fell on the road on Wednesday afternoon to the New York University Violets by the score of 11-3 at MCU Park in Brooklyn.

Maritime had seven players earn hits on the afternoon including junior
Connor Alwan (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), who drilled his second home run in the last five days to lead off the game down the leftfield line. Senior
Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and freshman
Antonio Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) each had RBIs on the afternoon, while senior
Chris Stewart (Bethpage, N.Y./Chaminade) and junior
Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) each scored runs.

Zach Parilla (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and
Tommy Buckman (McLean, Va./McLean) also had hits on the afternoon.

Maritime had eight pitchers toss an inning apiece, with freshman
Matthew Paghidas (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) making the start. Sophomores
Nick Fortunato (Coram, N.Y./Longwood), and
Sean McQuail (Middle Village, N.Y./Cathedral Prep) were next followed by junior
Brian Hughes (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy). Rookie
Brady Dolan (York, Pa./Northeastern) pitched the fifth, followed by sophomore
Alex Poliwoda (Southold, N.Y./Southold), before junior
Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) and freshman
Luciano Besh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Franklin Regional) closed out the game with hitless innings.

After Alwan led off the top of the first inning with a home run, Deddo followed with a single to centerfield. Up next was McLaughlin, who doubled to left centerfield to drive in Deddo and give the Privateers a 2-0 lead. New York University tied the game in the bottom of the first off of Paghidas as the game moved along to the second inning.

After a scoreless inning from Fortunato in the second, McQuail tossed the third and struck out a pair of Violets in the process. In the bottom of the fourth inning, New York University added three runs to take a 5-2 advantage. The Violets tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the bottom of the sixth to open up an 11-2 lead.

In the top of the eighth, Stewart led off the inning with a single up the middle, and then moved up to second as freshman
Matt Lobello (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) grounded out. Diaz pinch hit and drove a ball into centerfield to bring Stewart around to score and give Maritime its third run of the matchup.

Maritime (9-7, 4-0 Skyline) will return home and continue conference play on Friday, when the team plays host to Yeshiva at 11 a.m. on March 31 on the Reinhart Baseball Field.

New York University (11-4) will host City College of New York on Friday at 1 p.m. at MCU Park in Brooklyn.
