YONKERS, N.Y. – The Maritime women's soccer led by a 1-0 score at halftime, but the host Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence College scored midway through the second half to send the game to overtime. In the second overtime period the Gryphons scored their second straight goal to record the come-from-behind win at Tibbetts Brook Park on Wednesday evening.
Senior
Julianna Avitto (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) scored the team's lone goal in the 13th minute of play as it was her team-leading eighth goal of the season. Avitto also led the offensive attack with six of Maritime's 18 shots, while freshman
MacKenzie Fabiani (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) was second on the team with three shots including two on target.
In goal junior
Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough) registered six saves through the match as she suffers the hard-luck loss.
Maritime was able to get on the board early as senior
Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) took a shot that was blocked ahead of Avitto's first shot of the night that went wide. Avitto corralled the ball on the ensuing offensive push and was able to beat the goalie out of the net with the first goal of the match to give Maritime a 1-0 lead with 12:57 gone by.
Havens had to make just three saves through the first half, including one with seven minutes to go as she held the Gryphons scoreless as Maritime outshot Sarah Lawrence by a 7-6 margin in the first half.
In the 67th minute of play Sarah Lawrence was able to tie the game at one as the shot went to the far post and beyond the reach of Havens.
The Privateers had a chance to break the tie in the 74th minute as freshman
Emily Nix (East Patchogue, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) had a shot that rang off the post. Fabiani had a pair of shots in the closing minutes, while sophomore
Kayla Kelly (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) also had a shot that went high and off target. The Privateers had a few corner kick opportunities in the final two minutes but were unable to capitalize.
Sarah Lawrence had the first shot in the first overtime period, before Maritime had a pair of chances by Avitto go wide, while the second was stopped by the Gryphon goalkeeper.
In the second overtime freshman
Caitlin Etienne (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) had two chances, the second of which was denied by the Sarah Lawrence goalkeeper to keep the game even at one. In the 103rd minute the Gryphons were able to break through with the win as the Gryphons scored an unassisted goal that came off of a rebound.
Maritime (4-4-1, 1-2-0 Skyline) will be on the road this Saturday, when the team takes the short trip to Mount St. Vincent for a 12 p.m. start at the Athletic Field at Marillac.
Sarah Lawrence (4-5-1, 3-3-0 Skyline) will return to their home field at Tibbetts Brook Park on Monday for a non-conference matchup against the John Jay Bloodhounds with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
