PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Maritime volleyball team dropped their Skyline Conference first round matchup, 3-0, to the St. Joseph's (L.I.) Golden Eagles on Tuesday evening at the Danzi Athletic Center.
The Golden Eagles swept the match by the scores of 25-8, 25-11, and 25-19.
The Privateers were led by junior Meredith Hayes (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) who had six kills and four service aces. Senior Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) had four kills while also recording five digs. Freshman Erika Kirchner (Meadowmere Park, N.Y./Lawrence) had a team-high 10 assists to go along with a team-high eight digs. Freshman Abby Solomos (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) recorded seven digs and two assists while classmate Abby Steele (Crossville, Tenn./Stone Memorial) had three kills and four digs.
In the opening set, the score was tied 2-2 when St. Joseph's went on a 9-0 run to give the Golden Eagles an 11-2 lead. St. Joseph's pushed the lead to 21-3 eventually taking the first set by a score of 25-8.
In the second set, both teams battled back and forth with Maritime trailing 6-5 early. St. Joseph's took control the rest of the way winning the set 25-11.
In the third set, Maritime tied the score at three thanks to a St. Joseph's serving error. Midway through the set, the Privateers trailed 15-11 but rallied back to take a 16-15 lead thanks to four service aces from Hayes. The Golden Eagles tied it back up at 19 and then went on a 6-0 run to complete the match. St. Joseph's took the final set 25-19.
Maritime (10-15, 4-6 Skyline) has been eliminated from the playoffs and this concludes their 2017 season.
St. Joseph's (L.I.) (15-13, 8-2 Skyline) will return to action Thursday, November 2nd when they visit two seeded Merchant Marine in the Skyline Conference semifinals beginning at 7 p.m.
