THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime volleyball team wrapped up the 2017 home portion of its schedule on Tuesday evening, falling to the New Rochelle Blue Angels by the score of 3-0 on 'Senior Night' inside Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.

The Blue Angels swept the match by the scores of 25-12, 25-15, 25-14.

Prior to the match the Privateers honored the five members of their senior class with seniors
Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point),
Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson),
Rachel Rothstein (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville),
Ameera Khan (New City, N.Y./Paramus Catholic (N.J.)), and manager
Kevin Izzo (Cutchogue, N.Y./Mattituck) were recognized in a brief on-court ceremony.

In the match junior
Meredith Hayes (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) led the team with six kills, while freshman
Abby Steele (Crossville, Tenn./Stone Memorial) and Brady each had five on the night. Junior
Colleen Ireland (Hyde Park, N.Y./Mount Olive (N.J.)) had two kills, while Rothstein and freshman
Erika Kirchner (Meadowmere Park, N.Y./Lawrence) both added one kill apiece. Kirchner led the team with 15 assists on the evening.

The Privateers had one block from Brady, who also led the defensive effort with 11 kills on the night. Steele and freshman
Abby Solomos (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) added eight digs apiece, while Kirchner had four digs and Hayes had three on the night.

Maritime took the first point of the match as Kempski served the opening rally of the match that resulted in a kill from Brady. The Privateers added three of the next four points to take an early 4-1 lead. After Maritime led 5-2, the Blue Angels went on to take a 10-5 lead to put the set out of reach. New Rochelle added an 8-0 run to turn a 15-10 lead into a 23-10 advantage, and won the set 25-12.

The early-going of the second set was evenly matched as the two sides exchanged the lead on numerous occasions. The Privateers took a slim 8-6 lead, which New Rochelle erased and turned into a 17-13 lead. The Blue Angels responded to a Maritime point with five unanswered to take a 22-14 set lead, and eventually pulled away with the 25-15 set victory.

New Rochelle opened up an early 8-2 lead in the third set, which eventually swelled to a 14-6 advantage. Maritime trailed 17-7 and eventually 23-11 before rallying for three points including a service ace from Brady. New Rochelle eventually held on for the 25-14 set with two final points.

Maritime (10-13, 4-4 Skyline) will head on the road this Saturday for its final two matches of the regular season, in a key Skyline Conference tri-match against Merchant Marine and Farmingdale. The Privateers open with the Mariners at 12 p.m., followed by host Farmingdale at 2 p.m. from the Lynch Sports Center on Long Island.
