Women’s Soccer Draws with Old Westbury to Kick Off Homecoming Weekend

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime women's soccer team played a full 110 minutes, but a winner was not decided as the Privateers drew even with the Old Westbury Panthers by the score of 1-1 on Friday evening on Reinhart Field.

Freshman Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) provided the late heroics for the Privateers as she scored with 2:34 left in regulation to even the game at one off of a pass from senior Julianna Avitto (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. John the Baptist). Old Westbury had scored in the opening two minutes of the second half to take the 1-0 lead.

Avitto led the team with eight shots on the night, including three on target, while senior Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) had four shots with two on goal. Freshman Caitlin Etienne (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) added three shots with two on frame, while Wright added a game-high four shots on goal of her five overall shots.

In goal the Privateers had a six-save performance from junior Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough), as she was helped out by her defensive unit of senior Olivia Mihaljevich (Leona Valley, Calif./Quartz Hill), sophomores Kayla Kelly (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Leigh Kouril (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown), along with freshmen Nikki DellaSperanza (Huntington, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) and Ashley Giorgio (Islip, N.Y./Islip).

Old Westbury controlled much of the opening 45 minutes of play with six shots to Maritime's five, in the opening stanza Havens made four of her six saves on the night. The Panthers and Privateers were even in corner kicks through the opening half at two apiece.

In the second half Old Westbury was able to break through in the 47th minute after Havens was unable to get complete control of the ball allowing the Panthers to slot the ball into the open net to take the 1-0 lead.

After the Panther goal, the Privateers surged forward with an offensive output that saw Maritime outshoot their guests by a convincing 13-3 margin. The Privateers had a great offensive chance in the 72nd and 73rd minutes with three consecutive corner kicks by freshman MacKenzie Fabiani (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point), with Wright finally getting off a shot that was denied by the Panther goalkeeper.

Wright and Avitto had chances in the ensuing minutes with Wright chance on a free kick going just over the crossbar, while Avitto's free kick from a few yards further skimmed off the top of the crossbar.

It was Maritime's 13th and final shot of regulation that drew the Privateers even as Wright found the back of the net off of a cross from Avitto, and driving the ball towards the opposite post. The game was even at one with 2:34 left in regulation. Neither side had a shot in the remaining moments of regulation time as the contest progressed to overtime.

The Privateers took all six shots of the first overtime period, and added three more shots in the second overtime period, with five of those chances on target but denied by the Panther goalkeeper as the contest ended in a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of action.

Maritime (4-6-2, 1-4-1 Skyline) records its first conference tie since the 2011 season, when Maritime and Mount St. Vincent finished at an even 3-3 score. The Privateers will be in action again on Tuesday evening, when the team travels to nearby Purchase College for an 8 p.m. start with the Panthers.

Old Westbury (2-11-1. 1-4-1 Skyline) returns to play on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m., when the Panthers play host to the Mount St. Mary Knights for another league contest at Panther Park.
