THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - Maritime College has announced the hiring of Chris Monasch as Interim Director of Athletics, as revealed by the college on September 1, 2016.
Â
"We're very excited to have Chris with us in this role," said Maritime Dean of Students
Will Imbriale. "He brings a wealth of expertise as a NCAA Division I athletic director and conference commissioner. I know he will do a lot for the benefit of our athletic program and Maritime's student athletes."
Â
Monasch is the eighth to hold the position of Director of Athletics at Maritime College, which began its intercollegiate athletics program in 1945.
Â
"I am excited to join the team here at SUNY Maritime," commented Monasch. "We have a committed and talented group of student-athletes and coaches that I look forward to supporting as they compete during the fall season."
Â
In his role at Maritime, Monasch will oversee the entire athletics, intramural and club sports programs. The department currently sponsors 16 varsity sports, and three club programs, with more than 400 student-athletes competing for Skyline, Eastern Collegiate Football, USA Rowing, Intercollegiate Sailing Association and NCAA championships.
Â
Prior to his arrival on the Throggs Neck Peninsula, Monasch served as the Interim Director of Athletics at Division II East Stroudsburg University in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. While there, he oversaw the 18 Warrior athletic programs in the competitive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference of NCAA Division II.
Â
Before heading to Pennsylvania, Monasch was Director of Athletics of St. John's University in Queens, New York. He served as the Director of Athletics with the Red Storm from 2005 through 2015, and over that decade provided leadership to his alma mater's athletics program.
Â
During his tenure at St. John's, the Red Storm qualified for 26 NCAA Tournament appearances, won eight Big East Championships, and seven Big East Regular-Season titles under Monasch's guidance. His student-athletes also excelled in the classroom with a collective grade point average higher than the general student population, and dedicating more than 2,000 hours annually to service within the community.
Â
In addition to his time at St. John's, Monasch has also served as Commissioner of the America East Conference and Northeast Conference. He also held positions at Seton Hall University as Associate Director of Athletics, and at Fordham University as Assistant Director of Athletics and Interim Director of Athletics.
Â
Monasch earned his Bachelor's Degree from St. John's in Athletic Administration in 1981. He also holds a Master's Degree in Communications from Fordham and a Juris Doctorate from Seton Hall. He is a member of the New Jersey and Pennsylvania Bar Associations.
Monasch has also served as an adjunct professor in sports law at Seton Hall, and in sport management at St. John's.
He has also held several positions on NCAA committees, including spots on the national organization's Leadership Council and Management Council.
Â
The Maritime Athletics season is already underway, as four of the college's 10 fall and year-round sports have already begun competition.
