HYDE PARK, N.Y. – The Maritime Volleyball team was back in action on Monday evening, travelling to Hyde Park, N.Y. to take on the Culinary Institute of America Steels and defeated their hosts in straight sets by the score of 3-0.

Maritime did not have much trouble with the Steels taking down Culinary Institute by the scores of 25-13, 25-16 and 25-15 to pick up the victory.

Senior
Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) led the Privateers with eight kills on the night, while junior
Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and freshman
Sheila Flaherty (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) each had six kills apiece. Lombardo also led Maritime with three service aces, while senior
Alyssa Esposito (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and junior
Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) each had two aces each.

Senior
Erika Bailey (Newark Valley, N.Y./Tioga Central) added another 22 assists on the night to lead the Privateers in the assist category once again. Sophomore
Meredith Hayes (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) led Maritime with two blocks on the night, while Lombardo added one as well. In terms of digs, Brady led the Privateers with 10, while Bailey was second on the team with seven.

After falling behind 1-0 in the opening set, Maritime rolled out 10-straight points to take control of the opening set. Maritime led by a 15-4 score as Lombardo put down a service aces before Culinary answered back with a few points to trim the deficit. Ahead by a 17-7 score, Maritime outscored their hosts by an 8-6 margin to take the opening set by a 25-13 score.

In the second set, Maritime jumped ahead by a 5-1 score, then added on to make it 14-6. Culinary answered back to trim the deficit to 16-14, but the Privateers went on a three-point rally and eventually went on to close out the set by a 25-16 score.

The third set saw Culinary Institute jump out to 5-0 and 6-2 leads, Maritime answered back with six points to take an 8-6 lead. After the Steels tied the set at eight points apiece, Maritime went on an 11-3 run to take control of the set at 19-11. From there, the Privateers were able to close out the set by a score of 25-15.

Maritime (8-7, 2-2 Skyline) will play a non-conference tri-match on Saturday, when the team travels to Rutgers-Newark. The Privateers will play Baruch at 1 p.m. before taking on host Rutgers-Newark at 3 p.m.

Culinary Institute (4-4, 1-1 HVIAC) will travel to take on Davis in HVIAC action on Saturday, October 8 at 4 p.m.
