Volleyball Storms Past Yeshiva for First Skyline Victory of 2016

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Maritime Volleyball team registered its first Skyline Conference win of the season by defeating the Yeshiva Maccabees in straight sets. The Privateers knocked off the Maccabees by the scores of 25-15, 25-18, and 25-12.

Senior Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) led the team in kills with eight, service aces with seven and digs with 10. Freshman Sheila Flaherty (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) had a team-best three blocks, while junior Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) added two blocks on the match as well.

Senior Erika Bailey (Newark Valley, N.Y./Tioga Central) had 23 assists, while Lombardo added five of her own. In terms of digs, Lombardo led the way with Bailey two off of her pace with eight.

Maritime opened the match with a 4-1 lead, which swelled into an 18-11 advantage. In the closing stages of the set, Brady and Flaherty recorded kills as the Privateers benefitted from numerous Yeshiva miscues to close out the set.

In the second, the Privateers stumbled out of the blocks and battled back to tie the set at four. After five-straight points to take a 9-4 lead, Yeshiva got one point back to make it 9-5. Maritime then rattled off six unanswered points to take control of the set at 15-5. The Privateers went on a lengthy rally to reach set point, but Yeshiva denied Maritime before a service error gave the Privateers the second set win.

The third set saw Maritime battle in the early going as the set was even through the first 18 points at nine apiece. With the Privateers leading by a 16-12 score, Maritime closed out the stanza with nine consecutive points highlighted by kills from sophomore Isabella Kent (Narrowsburg, N.Y./Sullivan West), and Brady, as well as three-straight service aces by Lombardo.

Maritime (6-5, 1-1 Skyline) will get right back to action on Thursday with a match at New Rochelle set to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Yeshiva (0-10, 0-4 Skyline) will host a Skyline Conference tri-match on Sunday against Mount St. Vincent and St. Joseph's (L.I.) from the ARC Arena on the Baruch College Campus.
