PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's Lacrosse team picked up a road victory on Wednesday evening as the team defeated the Manhattanville Valiants by a 10-6 score from GoValiants.com Field in Westchester County.
Sophomore
Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) led the Privateers with four goals and one assist, while classmate
Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) collected a pair of goals. Junior
Joe Fusco (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill), along with sophomores
Julius Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) and
T.J. Ragusa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) all picked up one goal and one assist apiece.
Freshman
Michael Petty (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) also recorded one goal, while senior
Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) picked up the final point of the night for the Privateers with an assist. Hayes also led the Privateers with 13 ground balls as he dominated on faceoffs with wins in 16-of-19 attempts. Senior
Peter Rooney (Long Beach, N.Y./Chaminade) and sophomore
Joseph Hussey (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) both forced a pair of turnovers to lead the defensive effort.
In goal, sophomore
Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) was called on to make nine saves on the evening as he yielded six goals.
The game did not go as planned in the early going as Manhattanville jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead through the first nine minutes of play. Danahy scored the opening Privateer goal, followed by the first of the evening from Pellegrino as Maritime tied the game at two heading into the second quarter.
The Valiants struck first in the second inning, but Diaz connected on a man-up chance to even the game at three. Fusco gave Maritime their first lead of the game with a man-up tally with 3:48 left in the opening half. Both teams scored one more goal, including a goal from Danahy with three seconds left to give the Privateers a 5-4 halftime lead.
In the third, Pellegrino took a pass from Diaz to open the scoring, but Manhattanville answered right back with a goal to cut the Maritime lead back down to one. Petty got on the scoresheet with his third goal of the season to send the Privateers into the final quarter ahead by a 7-5 advantage.
In the fourth quarter, Manhattanville trimmed the Privateer lead back down to one with 9:50 left in the contest.
Ragusa scored his ninth of the season, followed by a goal from Pellegrino just 29 seconds later as Maritime moved ahead by a 9-6 score. As the team was down two players, the Privateers cleared the ball and Pellegrino capped off the scoring with a man-down tally to send Maritime to a 10-6 victory.
Maritime (5-2) will continue its four-game road trip on Saturday, when the Privateers open up Skyline Conference play at 4 p.m. against the Kean Cougars in Union, N.J.
Manhattanville (3-5) will look to stop its three-game losing streak a week next Wednesday as the Valiants will travel to Bard for a 6 p.m. start against the Raptors.
