Privateers Tamed by Gators in Saturday Road Contest

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Maritime Basketball team fell on the road to the Sage Gators by the score of 87-73 from Kahl Gym in New York State's Capital.

Leading the Privateers in points was sophomore Patrick MacDonald (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) with 18, Isaiah Hayes (Jamaica, N.Y./Queens Teaching) recorded 13 points and was just one rebound shy of a double-double. Junior Tim Hoch (Coventry, R.I./Fishers Island (N.Y.)) added 12 points, while freshman Michael Walker (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) added 10 points in 22 minutes.

Junior Brendon Halligan (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) and sophomore John Liccese (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) both collected nine points each, while freshman Pat Conway (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) added two points to cap off Maritime's scoring. Liccese led the team with four assists, while Halligan collected a pair of steals to lead the squad.

Maritime took a 1-0 lead on a Hayes free throw, but fell behind by a 5-3 score. Halligan tied the game with a pair from the line with just under two minutes gone by in the opening period. With Maritime down by two at 19-17, the Gators then went on a run to move ahead by 15 points with 6:52 left in the half.

The Privateers stormed back with a 12-2 run as Hoch, MacDonald and Liccese drove Maritime back within five at 39-34 with 4:15 left in the period. After Liccese drained a jumper with 30 seconds left in the half, Sage dropped back for a last-second three-pointer to head into the locker room ahead by a 51-41 score.

After the break, Maritime got the deficit back down to six at 56-50 with a layup from Hayes. After Hayes got the next defensive board, Liccese sank a pair from the line after a technical foul against the Gators. Walker got an offensive board off a missed free throw, and knocked down a layup to make the game a two-point contest as the Privateers trailed 56-54.
