Privateers End the Season Strong with Skyline Win Over Sarah Lawrence

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – In the final game of their 2015-16 campaign, the Maritime basketball team defeated the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons, 71-58, in a Saturday afternoon Skyline Conference matchup.

Sophomore center Patrick MacDonald (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) led the Privateers with another double-double, racking up 18 points and 13 rebounds. With his seven defensive rebounds in the game, MacDonald set the single-season defensive rebound record with 155. His 399 total points on the season is good for seventh all-time in program history in a single campaign.

Sophomore guard John Liccese (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) chipped in 15 points, six assists and two steals in the win. Liccese's strong sophomore season put him ninth on the single-season scoring list with 362, and third on the single-season assists list with 128, just one shy of tying the top mark.

Junior Brendon Halligan (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) and sophomore Akil Spruil both made two three-pointers, scoring 10 and nine points respectively in the game. Halligan's 48 three pointers made this season is good for fourth on the single season three pointer's made list.

Junior Isaiah Hayes (Jamaica, N.Y./Queens Teaching) added eight points and junior Tim Hoch (Coventry, R.I./Fishers Island (N.Y.)) netted seven points, shooting four-of-four from the free throw line. Hayes was just two blocks shy of breaking his own single season block record with 47 in 2015-16.

The Gryphons jumped out to an early 7-2 lead to start the game before Maritime went on a 19-4 run in the middle of the first half. Spruill capped off the run with a three-pointer to push the lead to 21-11 with 8:33 left in the half.

The Privateers were able to extend their lead thanks to a big first half from MacDonald. He scored 15 of his 18 points in the first period while shooting 7-of-10 from the field and adding eight rebounds. Maritime's biggest lead came at the 1:53 mark when a Liccese free throw, making the score 39-20.

The score was 42-26 going into the break, thanks to a layup as time expired from Halligan.

Sarah Lawrence played strong to start the half, quickly cutting the lead down to eight just three minutes into the second period. Maritime was able to hold off the Gryphons due to big three pointers from Hoch at 15:09 and then again by Halligan at 13:33. From that point, the Privateers went on a 6-0 run to push the lead back up to 15, at 58-43.

With 4:09 to go in the game, the Gryphons cut the deficit seven but were never able to overtake the Privateers.

Sarah Lawrence (5-19, 2-17 Skyline) were led by Parker Hagmaier who totaled 12 points and 14 rebounds in the loss.

Maritime (7-17, 7-12 Skyline)  will look forward to the 2016-17 season with the entire team expected to return.
