BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Maritime Volleyball team was back in action on Monday evening, taking on the Medgar Evers Cougars in non-conference action from the Prep Gymnasium. The Privateers picked up their ninth win of the season, sweeping the Cougars in straight sets for the victory.

Maritime won the opening set by a 25-14 score before a 25-10 set victory to take a 2-0 lead. In the third set, Maritime picked up the sweep with a 25-18 set victory.

Sophomore
Meredith Hayes (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) had a big night for Maritime as she had a match-best 10 kills and a .412 attacking percentage. Junior
Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) had six kills to go along with a team-leading 11 digs.

Erika Bailey (Newark Valley, N.Y./Tioga Central) led the Privateers with five service aces, and 19 assists to go along with three kills on the night. Classmate
Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) added four kills and picked up a pair of aces. Senior
Rachel Rothstein (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) had three aces, while classmate
Alyssa Esposito (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) had a pair of service aces.

Isabella Kent (Narrowsburg, N.Y./Sullivan West) chipped in with a kill, while freshman
Sheila Flaherty (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) had three kills, and sophomore
Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) had a dig.

After falling behind 4-0, Maritime muscled its way back into the set to even the score at six. The Privateers took control of the scoreboard with four-straight points to take an 11-8 lead. Ahead by a 12-11 score, Maritime rallied with eight unanswered points to take control at 20-11, before closing out the set at 25-14.

In the second set, Maritime's momentum surged the team ahead to a quick 7-0 lead. After a brief exchange, the Privateers rattled off five straight points to move ahead by a 13-2 score. The Cougars were no match for the Privateers in the second set as Maritime powered ahead to a 25-10 set win.

The third set was similar as Maritime opened up with a 6-1 lead. After three points from Medgar Evers, Maritime picked up five of the next six points in the set to move ahead 11-5. The Privateers built up a 16-8 lead, as both teams could not put any string of points together with Maritime ahead by a 21-15 mark on the scoreboard. After a few hiccups late in the set, the Privateers picked up the win on a service error for the straight-set victory.

Maritime (9-9, 2-2 Skyline) will make its long-awaited home debut on Wednesday, as the Privateers will play host to the William Paterson Pioneers from the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium at 7 p.m.

Medgar Evers (0-16, 0-3 CUNYAC) will continue to search for its first win of the season on Tuesday evening, when the Cougars host Cedar Crest from the Prep Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
