Men’s Soccer Caps off Regular Season with Overtime Victory vs. Mount St. Vincent

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Maritime men's soccer team wrapped up the 2016 regular season with a come-from-behind win in overtime against the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins from the Athletic Field at Marillac by the score of 3-2.

The Privateers picked up the win in the 97th minute of action as senior Kieran Donnelly (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) crossed the ball into the box from the right wing. With senior Kevin Ferreira (Centereach, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and freshman Anthony Sblendorio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) streaking down the middle of the field looking to drive the cross, the Dolphin goalkeeper marked up on Ferreira to eliminate the senior from the play. The ball continued past the pair, heading for Sblendorio, as a defender marked up on Sblendorio the ball ricocheted off of the defender and into the goal to give Maritime the victory.

Earlier in the game, Donnelly tallied a pair of game-tying goals as Maritime fell behind by a 1-0 score, and again trailed at 2-1. Sophomore Parker Gallt (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) picked up the assist on the first Privateer goal as he sent his corner kick into the box, which was headed by Donnelly into the back of the net.

Donnelly and sophomore Lucas Antenucci (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) led the Privateers with two shots apiece, while the team also got shots from Ferreira, Gallt, and freshmen Justin Forrest (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) and Aleks Olthoff-Cusumano (Eastport, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor).

In goal, freshman Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) stopped 10 shots on the night to pick up the win, which was his eighth of the season.

The Dolphins stormed out of the gates and took a bevy of shots in the early-going and eventually were able to score in the 10th minute of play off of swift passing to take a 1-0 lead.

After a few changes in the lineup, the Privateers were able to pick up their first shot of the match as Antenucci sent a header shot over the crossbar. The pressure continued as Gallt took a corner kick, but Maritime was unable to take a shot off of the corner kick.

Several plays later, the Privateers were awarded another corner kick and Gallt was able to find Donnelly, who headed the ball into the net at 31:45 to even the game at one.

However, the Dolphins answered right back a few minutes later to regain the one-goal advantage. The lead held through the remainder of the opening half as play progressed to the second period.

Both teams continued to have their chances, but were unsuccessful as play continued into the final 12 minutes of play.

With exactly 10 minutes left on the scoreboard, the Privateers were able to even the game once again as Donnelly tallied his second of the contest. Rodriguez made two more saves in the final 10 minutes of regulation as the game advanced to overtime.

In the extra session, Mount St. Vincent had the first goal-scoring opportunity in the 95th minute as Rodriguez was tasked to make a one-on-one save with a defender, who had broken through the Privateer defense.

After regaining possession, the Privateers were granted a throw-in and play resumed at the feet of Donnelly. The senior dodged around a defender, and crossed the ball into the six-yard box past Ferreira and the Dolphin goalkeeper, and to the feet of the Mount St. Vincent defender, who's momentum kept him in the direction of the goal, as the ball deflected off of his feet and into the net to give Maritime the victory.

While Maritime finishes their regular season with a 9-10-0 overall record, and a 5-6 record in Skyline matches, their path to postseason play is still not complete. The Privateers need Sarah Lawrence to defeat Sage on Wednesday evening to qualify for postseason play; should the Gryphons and Gators tie, or the Gators win, the Privateers will not qualify.

Mount St. Vincent finishes its season with a 6-12-1 overall record with a 5-6 mark in the Skyline Conference, and will look ahead to the 2017 season.
