THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Women's Soccer team registered a 4-0 win on Wednesday afternoon as the Privateers defeated the St. Joseph's (Bklyn) Bears on Reinhart Field.
Maritime was led by junior
Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold), who tallied a pair of goals on the game, while classmate
Gayle Woods (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) added one goal and one assist. Freshman
Leigh Kouril (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) also added her third goal of the season to help the Privateers to the one-sided victory.
In goal, sophomore
Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough) did not record a save as she earned the shutout victory, which was her third of the season. The victory was also the 10th win of Havens' career as she pushes her way towards the top of the all-time wins list, which is set at 14.
The Privateers opened the game with early pressure, as the team earned three corner kicks in the opening five minutes of the match. Woods picked up the first shot of the afternoon in the ninth minute of play, and finished the contest with a team-high 14 shots overall.
As play progressed into the latter stages of the first half, Yee notched her first goal of the contest from the left wing to put Maritime ahead 1-0.
Maritime scored again as Kouril got on the board in the 44th minute as she targeted the right post and got the ball past the diving goalkeeper as Maritime doubled its lead. Yee scored exactly one minute later off of a corner kick from Woods as the Privateers took a 3-0 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, Maritime continued to outshoot its guests as senior
Staci Evans (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge), and junior
Olivia Mihaljevich (Leona Valley, Calif./Quartz Hill) added to the barrage of shots by the Privateers.
In the closing minutes of the match, the Privateers were awarded a penalty kick after a collision occurred inside the 18-yard box. Woods converted on the opportunity for her fourth goal of the season as she drilled the ball into the lower right corner of the goal.
The final 1:26 ticked off the clock as Maritime sealed the victory by a 4-0 score.
The Privateers held the lead in most statistical categories as the team outshot its guests by a 35-2 margin. Maritime also had a dozen corner kicks while the Bears had four. The Privateers were also whistled offsides on two occasions.
Not seen in the statistics were the efforts of Maritime's defensive unit, which held the Bears to just two shots. Junior
Roseleen Frawley (Bronx, N.Y./Preston) had a strong defensive effort, along with Mihaljevich on the back line for the Privateers. Freshman
Elizabeth Millicker (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) also added to the Maritime defensive performance.
Maritime (4-11, 1-4 Skyline) will be back home on Friday afternoon, when the team plays host to the Farmingdale Rams on Reinhart Field with game time slated for 5:00 p.m.
St. Joseph's (Bklyn) (1-10) will play its final non-conference match of the season, as the team visits the Brooklyn Bulldogs for a 12 p.m. start on Saturday afternoon.
