THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's basketball team upended the third-place Farmingdale Rams, 73-63, in a Skyline Conference Saturday afternoon matchup. Four different Privateers reached double digits in Maritime's fifth win of the season.
Junior forward
Isaiah Hayes (Jamaica, N.Y./Queens Teaching) filled up the box score with 10 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and five blocks. Sophomore center
Patrick MacDonald (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) had another stellar performance with 19 points and 11 boards, doing most of his work in the low-post.
Sophomore
John Liccese (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) netted 15 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists in 37 minutes.
Brendon Halligan (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) added 11 points. Liccese and Halligan combined for six made three pointers in the game.
Maritime stormed out of the gates to start the game. After battling for a 12-8 lead, the Privateers went on a 13-0 run, to take their largest lead of the game and push the score to 25-8 with 10 minutes to go in the first period.
The Rams rallied back to score the next eight points, putting the game at 25-16. Junior guard
Tim Hoch (Coventry, R.I./Fishers Island (N.Y.)) stopped the run by stealing a loose ball in the paint and pushing the ball ahead, leading to an and-one fast break layup for Hayes.
Farmingdale cut the lead down to four, 36-32, before Liccese hit an off balance layup as time expired to increase the lead at halftime to 38-32.
Maritime trailed a few minutes into the second half as the Rams took their first lead of the game, 39-39, with 16 minutes to go. Just two minutes later, a corner three from Hoch tied the game at 43.
The Privateers led the rest of the way behind strong play from MacDonald who racked up eight points and 10 rebounds in the second half, going four of five from the free throw line, five of six overall.
The three point line was a big difference in the game as Maritime shot 10 for 32 compared to Rams who shot one for 18.
Sophomore Trey Kinard led the Rams (8-11, 8-6 Skyline) with 15 points and four rebounds in the loss.
Maritime's will look to keep the momentum going with another Skyline conference game on Monday, February 1, at 8 p.m. in Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium against Yeshiva.
