GORHAM, Maine – The Maritime women's soccer team played its third game of the season on Sunday afternoon and fell on the road to the Maine-Machias Clippers by the score of 4-0 from Hannaford Field on the University of Southern Maine campus.
In the game, freshman
Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough) led the team with seven saves on the contest. Sophomore
Julianna Avitto (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) had two shots for the Privateers, with one on target. Senior
Leanne Lavelle (New Windsor, N.Y./Washingtonville), junior
Marisa Athan (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola), and sophomores
Gayle Woods (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) and
Grace Stanton (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) also recorded solo shots in the loss.
It didn't take Maine-Machias long to get on the board as the Clippers scored just 47 seconds into the contest. The Clippers added their second goal in the 17th minute and took their 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
After the intermission, Maine-Machias added two more strikes in the 61st and 72nd minutes to seal the shutout win for the Clippers.
Team stats saw Maine-Machias take 16 shots versus Maritime's six, while corner kicks were 4-0 in favor of the Clipppers. The Privateers were also called offsides on two occasions, while the Clippers were whistled offsides once.
Maritime (1-2) will look to bounce back next weekend when the team travels to Buzzards Bay, Mass. to take on the Mass. Maritime Buccaneers next Saturday at 1 p.m. from Clean Harbors Stadium. Maine-Machias (2-0) will travel to take on Maine-Fort Kent on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m.
