Women’s Soccer Fall at Home in Skyline Opener against Sage

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Women's Soccer team dropped its Skyline Conference opener on Friday evening to the Sage Gators by the score of 5-0 on Reinhart Field.

Maritime was led by senior Leanne Lavelle (New Windsor, N.Y./Washingtonville) and sophomore Julianna Avitto (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), who both posted a pair of shots on goal apiece. Sophomore Gayle Woods (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) led the team with three shots, with one on target, while junior Kathleen Burns (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and freshman Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) also posted shots on goal. Freshman Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) also picked up one shot in the contest.

In goal, freshman Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough) picked up 10 saves in the solid effort as she played all 90 minutes in goal for the Privateers.

The Gators picked up a pair of goals in the opening 15 minutes of the contest, a lead which was doubled by the halftime break at 4-0. Salatto, Woods, Lavelle and Avitto all recorded shots through the opening 45.
Sage added one more goal just 13 seconds into the second period to cap off the scoring at five.

In the second half, Lavelle, Avitto, Burns, Deleva all had chances on goal but were unable to break through and snap the shutout.

Final stats saw Sage outshoot Maritime by a 20-12 score with shots on goal at 15-7. Corner kicks were close at a 4-3 clip in favor of the Gators, while Sage was called offsides on three occasions versus Maritime's one offside call.

Maritime (3-5-0, 0-1-0 Skyline) will have a quick turnaround as they travel to the Aviator Complex in Brooklyn, N.Y. to take on the St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) Bears at 12:00 p.m.

Sage (6-3-0, 2-0-0 Skyline) will resume Skyline play on Sunday afternoon as well, when the Gators play host to the St. Joseph's (LI) Golden Eagles with kickoff slated for 1:00 p.m.
