Volleyball Tripped Up by William Paterson in Road Contest

WAYNE, N.J. – The Maritime Volleyball team took to the road on Thursday evening, falling to the William Paterson Pioneer by the score of 3-0 at the Rec Center.
 
The Privateers were led by freshman Meredith Hayes (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy), who accumulated eight kills on the match. Junior Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) led the team in digs with 12 and also blocks with a pair, as both she and sophomore Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) led the squad with a pair of service aces. Junior Erika Bailey (Newark Valley, N.Y./Tioga Central) also contributed with 23 assists on the evening.
 
After falling behind quickly by a 3-0 score in the opening set, Maritime came back with two as Hayes and Lombardo picked up a pair of kills. William Paterson went on to extend its lead to 16-6, but the Privateers forged a six-point comeback as Kempski and Hayes combined for five kills.
 
The Pioneers went on to take the opening set by a 25-17 score. William Paterson followed with a 25-15 win in the second set, with the Privateers led by sophomore Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and Kempski with a pair of kills each, while Lombardo added a pair of service aces towards the end of the set.
 
The third set saw William Paterson convert on the opening point, but Maritime answered on two errors by the Pioneers. William Paterson opened up a 10-6 lead, but kills from Lombardo and Kempski got the team back to within one.
 
William Paterson went on a 6-0 run to take an 18-11 lead as the Pioneers went on to take the set by a 25-13 score.
 
Overall, Maritime had 26 kills to William Paterson's 31 kills. Errors proved to be the major difference in the contest as the Privateers had 27, while William Paterson committed just 11 errors overall.
 
Maritime (2-4) will have a busy weekend ahead as the team travels to Kings Point, N.Y. to take on Maine Maritime at 10 a.m. and Mass. Maritime at 12 p.m. in an abbreviated stay at the 2015 Maritime Classic.
 
William Paterson (6-3, 1-1 NJAC) will head to Purchase, N.Y. next to take on Farmingdale and Manhattanville in a tri-match hosted by the Valiants.
