PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Maritime baseball team had its season come to the end on Saturday afternoon as the team fell in the first elimination game to the third-seeded Farmingdale Rams at Gregg Alfano Field on Long Island, by the final score of 7-3.
Six different players collected hits offensively for the team, including freshman
Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) with three hits, and senior
Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) with a pair. Deddo along with senior
Joe Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and junior
Paul Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) all collected RBIs.
On the hill, freshman
Eric Kwiecinski (Commack, N.Y./St. Dominic) got the start and made it through 4 1/3 innings. Senior
Paul Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) and freshman
Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) came on to pitch the final 4 2/3 innings and allowed four hits over that span.
Kwiecinski allowed a one out walk in the top of the first, but freshman
Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) was able to throw out the runner trying to steal second base, as the Rams did not score. In the second, Farmingdale took a 1-0 lead on a pair of hits. The top of the fourth inning saw the Rams add three more runs to go ahead by four runs.
After two of the first three batters reached in the fifth inning, Kwiecinski was lifted for Pfundstein, who allowed one inherited runner to score to give Farmingdale a 5-0 advantage.
Schiavoni had a booming double to lead off the bottom of the inning. Two batters later, Deddo tripled to deep left centerfield to chase home Schiavoni with Maritime's first run of the day. Longo was up next and sent a ball deep enough to centerfield to bring Deddo home, trimming the deficit to 5-2.
Pfundstein continued to roll as he got three ground ball outs in the sixth to bring up the Privateer offense once again.
Junior
Kevin Monahan (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) connected on a one-out single, followed by Doerbecker picking up a base knock to put runners at the corners.
With a new pitcher on the hill for Farmingdale, Woodburn grounded out to second base allowing Monahan to score Maritime's third run of the afternoon. The Privateers threatened again in the seventh inning as two runners reached base, but Maritime was unable to get the hit needed to tie the game or take the lead.
In the top of the eighth, Pfundstein was touched up for two runs before D'Ancona emerged from the bullpen and got the final out of the inning.
With the Rams ahead by a 7-3 margin, the Privateers needed baserunners but were unable to get anyone on base in the bottom of the eighth. Deddo reached in the bottom of the ninth on a one out walk, but it wasn't enough as Farmingdale retired the final two batters to put an end to the Maritime season.
Kwiecinski was saddled with the loss after allowing four earned runs over his final outing of the season. Pfundstein wrapped up his career giving up two runs on three hits in 3 1/3 innings, but did lead the Privateers this season with a 3.15 ERA. D'Ancona pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to give him the team lead during his rookie season with 40 innings pitched, and 41 total strikeouts after two against Farmingdale.
Earlier in the day, Old Westbury won on a walk-off hit to advance to the championship round on Sunday afternoon. With its win over Maritime, Farmingdale advanced to the second elimination game of the day against host St. Joseph's (LI), which lost to Old Westbury in Saturday's opener. The winner of the game between the Rams and Golden Eagles on Saturday will advance to take on Old Westbury in the championship round on Sunday.
Maritime wrapped up its season with a final record of 12-18 and a mark of 7-7 in Skyline Conference contests.
