Men’s Lacrosse Upended by Oswego on Long Island

UNIONDALE, N.Y. – The Maritime men's lacrosse team was able to get back on the field on Saturday afternoon as the Privateers took on the Oswego Lakers at the Mitchel Athletic Complex on Long Island. In the game, the Lakers came away with an 8-1 victory in their first game of the year.

Maritime was playing its second game of the season, and was led by senior Mike Gangarossa (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) with the team's lone goal on the contest, with freshman Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) picking up the assist. In goal, freshman Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) made 13 stops while playing the majority of time in goal.

After the Privateers won the opening faceoff and failed to capitalize on their first two offensive series, the Lakers came down the field and scored the first goal to take a 1-0 lead with just 4:28 gone by in the period. Oswego scored again in a man-up situation to take a two goal advantage.

With 1:38 left, the Lakers took a pair of penalties to give Maritime a two-man advantage. The Privateers capitalized with Gangarossa trimming the lead in half off of a feed from Danahy.

In the second quarter, Oswego scored twice more including a goal on an extra-man opportunity and took a 4-1 lead into the halftime break. The Lakers tallied three more goals in the third quarter, and one more with just over two minutes to go in the fourth to cap off the win as Oswego ran away late with the 8-1 victory.

Defensively, freshman Joseph Hussey (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and senior Jordan Rose (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) caused a pair of turnovers each. Junior Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) was 6-of-11 on faceoffs and led the team with five ground balls. Danahy was second on the team with four loose ball pickups.

Maritime (1-1, 0-0 Skyline) will look to regroup on Wednesday evening when the team plays its makeup game at Manhattanville at 7 p.m. from GoValiants.com Field.

Oswego (1-0, 0-0 SUNYAC) will not have to wait long for its next game as the team takes on the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m. against the Mariners.
