Men’s Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker in Maritime Cup Championship Game

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime men's lacrosse team fell in the 2015 Maritime Cup Championship Game on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Mass. Maritime Buccaneers by the score of 10-9 in double overtime on Reinhart Field.

The game saw eight different lead changes, and also saw the game tied on seven separate occasions throughout nearly 69 minutes of play. With the Privateers trailing at 9-8 late in the fourth quarter, freshman Joe Fusco (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) took a shot and evened the game with 1:05 left in regulation. However, the Privateers were unable to score first in overtime, as the Buccaneers took the game in double overtime with 1:09 left in the second extra session.

The Privateers were led by senior Paul Grubb (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) with five points on the contest as he collected three goals and two assists on a career-best 18 shots. Freshman Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) also collected three goals and also chipped in with an assists.

Junior Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) was dominant on faceoffs as he won 20-of-23 on the game and led the team with 15 ground balls. Defensively, classmate Jonathan Strezenec (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) recorded two caused turnovers, while senior Jordan Rose (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) and freshmen Victor Titone (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) and Julius Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) contributed with two apiece.

In goal, freshman Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) recorded 12 saves as he took the tough loss against his record.

On the game, Maritime had 60 shots, the most since last season's win against Lyndon State when the team had 62 in late March. The Privateers were also able to collect 68 ground balls, and was 2-for-7 on extra-man opportunities in the contest.

Diaz got on the scoresheet first as he ripped a rising shot into the net to put the Privateers ahead just over a minute into the contest. Mass. Maritime was able to record two goals down the stretch of the period and took a 2-1 lead into the second quarter.

The next period began with Maritime knotting up the game at two as Pellegrino took a pass from senior Rob Lalena (Bellmore, N.Y./Holy Trinity) tie the game at two. The two sides played scoreless lacrosse for nearly nine minutes before the Buccaneers regained a one-goal advantage with 3:32 left in the half.

The Privateer offense exploded for three quick goals in the span of 2:31 as Grubb collected a pair of unassisted markers, followed by a tally from freshman Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) in a man-up situation as the Privateers took a 5-3 lead into the halftime break.

Mass. Maritime controlled much of the play in the third quarter as the Buccaneers outscored their hosts by a 4-2 margin. Maritime's third quarter goals came from the sticks of Grubb and Pellegrino as the game was deadlocked at seven moving into the final 15 minutes of regulation.

The Privateers struck first in the fourth period with a goal as Grubb found Pellegrino for a man-up tally with just over four minutes gone by. Several minutes later, the Buccaneers evened the game up once again at eight, and then took the lead at 9-8 as the team scored with just 1:41 left to go in regulation.

The following possession was won by the Privateers, as the team quickly called a timeout to set up an offensive play as the team looked to tie the game once again. Grubb's first shot of the possession went wide, but was backed up by the Privateers. As the team retained possession, Fusco ripped a shot off a pass from Pellegrino and rattled the cage with 65 seconds left as the rookie tied the game at nine apiece.

The horn sounded just about a minute later, and the Privateers and Buccaneers were off to overtime to settle the Maritime Cup Championship in sudden victory fashion.

In the first extra session, Maritime outshot Mass. Maritime by a 6-1 margin, but were unable to get the ball on target in their first five attempts. The four minutes ended and the teams were off to a second overtime period.

The second overtime saw the Privateers win the opening draw once again, but was only able to get one shot off before Mass. Maritime came back down the field but returned the favor by turning the ball over as well. Maritime then gave the ball back on an unforced error, allowing the Buccaneers to set up their offense once again.

The Privateers were forced to go in a man-down situation as a penalty forced Maritime to play 8-on-9 in the field. Mass. Maritime turned the ball over, but regained the ball after the Privateers were unable to clear the ball. Mass. Maritime took the ball behind the cage, and on a quick outlet pass, was able to get off the game winning shot with just four seconds left on the man-down situation for the Privateers.

The win clinches the second straight Maritime Cup for the Buccaneers, who won the inaugural cup a season ago in Castine, Maine with wins over the Privateers and Maine Maritime Mariners a season ago as well.
