Men’s Lacrosse Upends Maine Maritime to Open 2015 Maritime Cup

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime men's lacrosse team opened up the 2015 Maritime Cup with a victory on Friday evening with a win over the Maine Maritime Mariners by the score of 15-8 on Reinhart Field.

For the Privateers, it was the team's first game on the newly renovated Reinhart Field after having its first two scheduled home games forced away from Throggs Neck, N.Y. due to poor field and weather conditions.

On the game, freshman Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) finished the night with a team-best seven points as he collected four goals and three assists. Freshman Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) had three goals, while senior Mike Gangarossa (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and freshman Matt Murphy (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) each collected two goals. Senior Paul Grubb (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) was tied with Pellegrino for the team lead with three helpers.

Defensively Gangarossa, and junior Jonathan Strezenec (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) led the team with three caused turnovers each, while senior Jordan Rose (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) and freshman Victor Titone (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) each had a pair. Junior Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) led the team with eight ground balls, while Strezenec and Danahy each had six.

Hayes was also 12-of-22 on his faceoff chances on Friday night. Meanwhile in goal, freshman Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) had a relatively quiet night with nine saves as he picked up his second win of the season.

Maine Maritime was actually the first team to light up the scoreboard as the Mariners took a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the contest. Several minutes later Pellegrino rattled the net for the first time on the night to knot the game at one apiece.

Several possessions later, Grubb found Pellegrino on a short pass as the rookie put the Privateers up by a 2-1 count. Danahy found the back of the net late in the period to give Maritime a 3-1 advantage heading to the second quarter.

It didn't take Maritime long to score once again as Gangarossa scored on a man-up opportunity to put the Privateers ahead by three. Pellegrino added another goal, followed by classmate Paul Lafrancesa, who received a pass from sophomore Kevin Izzo (Cutchogue, N.Y./Mattituck) to make the score 6-1.

Gangarossa and Danahy scored the final two goals of the half for the Privateers as the team took an 8-1 lead into the halftime break.

Pellegrino opened the scoring in the second half to put the Privateers up by eight, but Maine Maritime answered back with a quick man-up goal. Danahy gave the team an eight-goal lead once again as he took a pass from Pellegrino.

Maine Maritime scored three of the next four goals late in the third quarter as the Mariners made the score an eight-goal deficit heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

The Mariners added four more unanswered goals to start off the fourth quarter as Maine Maritime pulled within four at 12-8.

The Privateers were able to stop the bleeding as Izzo struck for his first goal of the season off a pass from senior Daniel Ahern (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Dominic). Sophomore Joe Fusco (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) added Maritime's 14th goal of the night, followed by Murphy collecting another goal to cap off the scoring at 15-8 in favor of the Privateers.

Maine Maritime (0-3, 0-0 NAC) will also take on Mass. Maritime in its next game on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. on Reinhart Field.
