THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime men's basketball team defeated the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons 71-55 on Saturday afternoon at Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
Maritime was led by senior
T'Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy) who finished the with a game-high 16 points, while classmate
Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) added 12 and dished out a game-high six assists. Sophomore
Isaiah Hayes (Jamaica, N.Y./Queens Teaching) contributed with 11 points, while Corley and freshman
Patrick MacDonald (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) each pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
Sarah Lawrence opened the game up on a jumper with 1:29 into the game, followed by a Maritime countered with a layup from MacDonald, tying the game at two. This started an 8-0 run, spanning three minutes as Maritime opened up an 8-2 lead. After another bucket from the Gryphons, the Privateers went on another lengthy run as the team rattled off 11 straight points to make the score 19-4.
Maritime rattled off a brief 5-0 run to make the score 23-6 in favor of the Privateers, as the team then finsihed off the period with a 22-10 advantage to take a 45-16 score into the halftime break. In the opening stanza, Maritime was led by Gibson with 15 points, while Corley netted a dozen. MacDonald poured in six points and pulled down seven rebounds, while freshman
John Liccese (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) also had six points.
In the second half, Maritime continued to create chances, and capitalize off miscues from Sarah Lawrence as the team continued to keep the Gryphons at bay though the remainder of the contest. For the half, Hayes netted 11 of the teams 32 points in the period, while junior
Tim McNamara (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) added six points and five rebounds. Sophomore
Tim Hoch (Coventry, R.I./Fishers Island (N.Y.)) sank a 3-point shot, while freshman
Naseer Stevenson (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) added three points and also pulled down two rebounds.
Other scorers included sophomore
Brendon Halligan (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) with two points for a game-total of four, while classmate
Bobby Parlow (Bay Head, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) netted two points, and also had five rebounds. Sophomore
Darien Bryan (Jamaica, N.Y./Queens Teaching) added nine minutes in reserve, while junior
Angel Gonzalez (Central Falls, R.I./Central Falls) added to the scoring with a basket. Freshman
Zach Hardman (Ojai, Calif./Nordhoff) ended the contest with two minutes on the court, while rookie
Josh Raime (Elmont, N.Y./Holy Cross) made his collegiate debut in the final minute of action. Rookie
Tim McQuail (Middle Village, N.Y./Cathedral Prep) also saw several minutes on the floor and picked up an offensive rebound.
Maritime (6-15, 4-10 Skyline) will resume conference play on Wednesday night, when the team travels to Patchogue, N.Y. and play the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's (LI), with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
Sarah Lawrence (1-19, 0-14 Skyline) will host Mount St. Mary Knights at the Campbell Sports Center in Bronxville, N.Y., with game-time will be 7 p.m.
