Volleyball Sweeps Past Pratt on Thursday Evening

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Maritime Volleyball team made quick work of the Pratt Cannoneers on Thursday evening. The Privateers swept past their hosts by the scores of 25-13, 25-10, and 25-16.

Leading the way for the Privateers was junior Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville), who amassed 14 kills and added seven digs with five assists. Senior Charlotte Acklin (Lewes, Del./West Broward (Fla.)) was second on the night with six kills, followed closely by freshman Meredith Hayes (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) with five. Junior Erika Bailey (Newark Valley, N.Y./Tioga Central) picked up 21 assists, and had the match-clinching kill for her only kill of the night.

Defensively, sophomore Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) led the way with 10 digs, followed by Bailey with nine. Acklin chipped in with eight digs, while freshman Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) recorded six of her own. Hayes had four blocks on the night, while Lombardo and senior Meghan Burke (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) each had two apiece.

The early session saw both sides battle back-and-forth as the Privateers came from behind to tie the set at four, while Pratt later tied the set at seven apiece. After Pratt was able to even the opening set at 11, Maritime answered with a lengthy run to take control.

During the run, Lombardo picked up three kills, while Bailey collected a service ace to propel Maritime ahead by a 19-11 score. After a quick point by Pratt, Maritime collected six of the final seven points in the set to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, both teams played evenly in the early-going once again but Maritime again answered with a long run after leading by just a 6-5 score.

Lombardo got the rally started with a kill, and then assisted on a block with Burke for the next point. Errors by the Cannoneers and a kill by Burke, put Maritime up by a 13-5 margin. The Privateers worked their way up to a 19-9 advantage, and went on to close out the set as Hayes, Brady and Lombardo all registered kills in the waning stages of the set.

In the third, Maritime looked to finish off the match quickly with an early 8-3 lead as Lombardo collected three service aces in the first few rallies. Maritime took a 12-6 and eventually led by a 21-11 score, however Pratt refused to go down as the Cannoneers recorded the next five points unanswered.

The Privateers ended the run as Lombardo earned a kill, followed by a kill from Acklin. Lombardo put down a service ace, for her team-leading fourth of the match, before the final blow coming from Bailey as it was Pfundstein to pick up the assist on the final point.

Maritime (11-7, 4-2 Skyline) extends its winning-streak to six-straight matches, which is the longest on record dating back to the 2002 season. The team will look to keep its winning ways alive on Saturday with a tough tri-match that will feature the Privateers against Baruch at 11 a.m. and Rutgers-Newark at 1 p.m.

Pratt (4-12, 2-1 HVIAC) will take on its second-straight Skyline Conference opponent, when the team travels to Bronxville, N.Y. for a date with the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.
