THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Sophomore
Gayle Woods (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) of the Maritime Women's Soccer team became the second player in program history to record 12 goals in a single-season. The goal came during the team's 4-1 loss to the Old Westbury Panthers on Wednesday evening on Reinhart Field.
Â
The goal for Woods, which was scored late in the match, gave Woods the fifth highest goal total in a single-season behind the four years of all-time goal-scoring leader Jorrie Trenkamp, who registered 16, 14, 20, and 24 goals in each of her four respective seasons. The goal, also moved Woods into a third place tie on both the all-time points list with 40 for her career, and all-time goals list with 17 thus far in less than two seasons.
During the game, freshman goalkeeper
Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough) also recorded a career-best total with 16 saves as she played the entire 90 minutes in goal. Havens and the Privateer defensive unit of senior
Meghin Paczkowski (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) and
Caroline Reynolds (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego), along with sophomores
Paige Frankel (Hackensack, N.J./Immaculate Conception) and
Olivia Mihaljevich (Leona Valley, Calif./Quartz Hill) held the Panthers scoreless through the entire first half. Senior
Grace Suhovsky (Island Park, N.Y./Holy Trinity) also contributed with 58 minutes off the bench for the Privateer back line in her season debut.
Â
Through the early stages of the match, Maritime mustered just one shot as freshman
Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) ripped an off-target shot just wide of the right post.
Â
In the second half, Old Westbury found the back of the net just under seven minutes into the half to break the deadlock.
Salatto had another opportunity, but again the chance was off target. The Panthers picked up three more goals through the remainder of the period to take a 4-0 lead with less than eight minutes remaining.
Â
Woods, Salatto, and junior
Kathleen Burns (Islip, N.Y./Islip) all recorded shots in the closing minutes, before Maritime finally got on the board with Woods' unassisted tally in the final minute of regulation.
Â
Corner kicks in the match were even at four apiece, while the Panthers were called offsides on three occasions while the Privateers were whistled ahead of the play just once.
Â
Maritime (5-7, 2-3 Skyline) will head back on the road for its next matchup on Tuesday evening when the Privateers travel to visit the Purchase Panthers for a 7:30 p.m. start in Purchase, N.Y.
Â
Old Westbury (7-3, 4-0 Skyline) will return home for its next two matches, beginning with the Mount St. Mary Knights on Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. kickoff from Panther Park.
