YONKERS, N.Y. – The Maritime Women's Soccer team collected its second Skyline Conference win on Monday evening by the score of 1-0 over the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons at Tibbetts Brook Park.
Sophomore
Gayle Woods (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) scored her team-leading 11th goal of the year just 6:42 over the contest off a pass from rookie
Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) for the game-winning tally.
In goal, freshman
Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough) registered eight saves to pick up her fifth victory of the season, as she has now accumulated 81 saves in her 11 matches thus far.
The game started out well for the Privateers, earning three corner kicks in the first five minutes of the match. After a foul was called against Sarah Lawrence, the Privateers came down the field and Woods crossed a shot from the right wing to the inside of the left post off the Salatto pass.
After the initial shot of the contest resulted in a goal, the two sides exchanged three shots apiece through the remainder of the opening period with Maritime hanging onto its 1-0 lead.
In the second half, the Privateer defense along with Havens stood tall as the unit allowed just seven shots through the remainder of regulation to seal the shutout win. The defensive unit was anchored by the group of senior
Meghin Paczkowski (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside), sophomores
Paige Frankel (Hackensack, N.J./Immaculate Conception) and
Olivia Mihaljevich (Leona Valley, Calif./Quartz Hill), as well as freshman
Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place).
The midfield unit of Woods, Salatto, junior
Kathleen Burns (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and sophomore
Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) all assisted in denying the Gryphon transition game.
Maritime (5-6, 2-2 Skyline) will play host to the Old Westbury Panthers on Wednesday evening, for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Reinhart Field.
Sarah Lawrence (3-7, 1-5 Skyline) will host preseason favorite Farmingdale on Wednesday evening for a 7:30 p.m. start at Tibbetts Brook Park.
