Volleyball Closes Out Non-Conference Slate with Three-Set Win vs. Medgar Evers

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Maritime Volleyball team swept by the Medgar Evers Cougars on Thursday evening, defeating the Cougars by the scores of 25-18, 25-18, and 25-20.

Leading the way for Maritime was junior Erika Bailey (Newark Valley, N.Y./Tioga Central) with 25 assists and a team-best six service aces to go along with three digs on the afternoon. Sophomore Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) led the squad with nine kills, while junior Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) collected eight kills.

Defensively, junior Irene Gogos (Jackson Heights, N.Y./Aviation) led the team with seven digs with Bailey and Lombardo each contributing with three apiece. Lombardo also had two blocks on the match, while freshman Meredith Hayes (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) picked up one as well.

Maritime jumped ahead in the first set as the Privateers took advantage of numerous errors by the Cougars to take a 9-2 lead. Lombardo rallied the team once again with a kill and pair of service aces as the team moved ahead by a 14-5 advantage.

Medgar Evers closed the gap to 19-17, but Maritime was able to rally late in the opening set on kills by Lombardo and senior Colleen Sheehy (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) to close out the set at 25-18.

The Privateers won the second set by the same score. After falling behind by an 11-8 score, Maritime surged back and took a 20-17 lead. Maritime was able to close out the set with five unanswered points to take a two-set to none lead.

Maritime stormed to an overwhelming lead in the third period as the team took a 10-1 lead, due in large part to a series of service aces from both Bailey and Brady.

After taking an 11-point lead at 21-10, Maritime was outscored by a 10-4 margin as the Cougars made a late push to close the gap to 24-20. After the Cougars served, Maritime finished off the set on an attacking error by Medgar Evers to pick up the match-clinching point.

Maritime (15-13, 4-4 Skyline) will look to finish of the regular season on a high this Saturday when the team travels to Riverdale, N.Y. for a Skyline Tri-Match with the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins and the Purchase Panthers.

Medgar Evers (0-24, 0-8 CUNYAC) will look ahead to the 2016 season, as tonight's contest was the final of the season for the Cougars.
