THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Junior
Erika Bailey (Newark Valley, N.Y./Tioga Central) of the Maritime Volleyball team collected a Privateer record of 43 assists on Friday evening as she helped lead the Privateers to a three-set to one victory over the Staten Island Dolphins on Friday evening inside Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.

In addition to her record-setting 43 assists, Bailey also eclipsed the Maritime single-season mark, as she now has a total of 327 assists on the season. The total breaks the previous record of 326 set during the 2014 season.

Including her 43 assists, Bailey also contributed with a pair of kills and registered 12 digs on the match. Junior
Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) led the squad with 19 kills, with sophomore
Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) right behind with 18 kills. Senior
Charlotte Acklin (Lewes, Del./West Broward (Fla.)) registered eight kills, with freshman
Meredith Hayes (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) collecting seven kills on the evening.

Defensively, Hayes led the team with three blocks, while Lombardo, Brady and senior
Meghan Burke (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) also picked up one block apiece in the win. Brady picked up a team-best 20 digs, to tie her season-best of 20 set in the team's last match against Delaware Valley. Lombardo also set a season-high with 19 digs on the match, as did Bailey with her dozen. Freshman
Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) also recorded a season-high with 14 digs on the match.

In the first set, Maritime jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead with Lombardo and Bailey picking up kills in the run. Staten Island closed the gap and took its first lead of the set at 9-8. With the set tied at 11, Staten Island took advantage of several Privateer errors and regained control of the set and took control of the set late in the period to run away with a 25-19 win.

Maritime responded in the second set and jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with Brady and Lombardo combining for three kills. A kill by Hayes and a Dolphin attacking error gave Maritime a 7-2 advantage, but Staten Island again closed the gap to make the score 8-6 in favor of the Privateers.

The Privateers took advantage of several Staten Island miscues to balloon their lead up to 14-6, and eventually 17-7. Kills by Lombardo and Bailey gave Maritime a 10-point lead at 21-11 and three more points gave the team a 24-13 lead. Staten Island warded off defeat with four unanswered points, but Acklin put an end to the set on a kill to even the match at one with a 25-17 victory.

In the third set, Maritime once again took a quick 5-1 lead, but Staten Island trimmed the deficit to two. The match seesawed back-and-forth with Maritime holding onto a 9-8 advantage. The Privateers rattled off another five consecutive points, but Staten Island answered to make the score 15-14. The Dolphins went on a lengthy run to take its first lead of the set and took back control with a 21-17 lead.

Coming from behind, the Privateers rallied once again as Lombardo turned the tide with a kill. A pair of attack errors by Staten Island made the score 22-20 in favor of the Dolphins. Brady then went on a strong individual run with four unanswered kills to give Maritime a chance to put the set away with a 24-23 lead. An attacking error by the Dolphins did just that as the Privateers took a two set to one lead.

The fourth set saw Staten Island start out of the gates hot with a 4-1 lead. Maritime evened the set at four with a kill from Lombardo. Staten Island rolled out a strong rally to take an 11-7 lead, but again Maritime responded with four straight points to tie the stanza at 11. Maritime had to come from behind throughout the set, and evened the score at 16, 17, 18, and again at 19, but eventually took the lead at 20-19.

With the score tied at 20, a service error gave Maritime the advantage once again. Brady collected a kill, followed by a Dolphin error, Hayes then earned a kill to give the Privateers a match-point opportunity. Brady capitalized on that chance and put down the match-clinching point to give Maritime a three set to one victory.

Maritime (8-7, 2-2 Skyline) will look to keep its three-match winning streak alive on Sunday with a pair of Skyline Conference contests taking place at Sarah Lawrence. The Privateers will meet the St. Joseph's (Bklyn) Bears in their first-ever Skyline Conference meeting at 1 p.m. and will take on host Sarah Lawrence at 3 p.m. from the Campbell Sports Center in Bronxville, N.Y.

Staten Island (5-7, 1-4 CUNYAC) will travel to Newburgh, N.Y. for a date with the Mount St. Mary Knights beginning at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6 from the Kaplan Center.
