Men’s Basketball Falters against Yeshiva in Home Conference Action

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime men's basketball team fell at home to the Yeshiva Maccabees by the score of 90-66 on Saturday evening from the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.

The Privateers were led by freshman John Liccese (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) with 12 points on the night, while sophomore Isaiah Hayes (Jamaica, N.Y./Queens Teaching) collected eight rebounds to lead the team on the glass. Hayes fell one point shy of a double-double as he ended the night with nine, sophomore Bobby Parlow (Bay Head, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) and freshman Christian Bilger (Wimberley, Texas/Wimberley) also collected nine points each.

Yeshiva started out with six straight on back-to-back three-pointers, but Liccese answered with a three-pointer of his own. Parlow then connected on a layup to trim the early deficit to one with 16:27 left in the opening period. The Privateers were able to tie the game at both 10 and 12 points, but the Maccabees rattled off nine unanswered points and pulled ahead by a 21-12 score.

Maritime was able to pull back within three at 23-20 with 8:19 to go in the half, but again Yeshiva pulled away and took a 21-point lead into the halftime break for its largest lead of the contest. The lead ballooned to as many as 32 points in the second half in favor of Yeshiva, but Maritime was able to close the gap late on a made free throw by Bours, and a three-pointer at the buzzer by freshman Tim McQuail (Middle Village, N.Y./Cathedral Prep) to cap off the scoring at 90-66.

The Privateers as a team shot 36.9% from the floor on 24-of-65 shooting, including 7-of-15 from beyond the arc. As a squad Maritime collected 33 rebounds, while Yeshiva pulled down 50 boards on the night. No players fouled out despite a total of 50 fouls being called on the night between both sides.

Maritime (5-11, 3-6 Skyline) will look to regroup on Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. when the team travels to Long Island for the second time this year for a date with the Old Westbury Panthers.

Yeshiva (10-4, 7-2 Skyline) travels to take on Sarah Lawrence on Wednesday at 7 p.m. from Bronxville, N.Y.
