Women’s Soccer Rolls to Skyline Victory over Sarah Lawrence

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime women's soccer team upended the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons on Friday evening by the score of 3-0 on Reinhart Field.
 
Maritime got its three goals from three different players as sophomore Kathleen Burns (Islip, N.Y./Islip), and freshmen Julianna Avitto (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and Gayle Woods (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) all found the back of the net in the win. In goal, junior Kristen Hoar (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore East) recorded eight saves en route to her fourth win of the season.
 
Both sides went through the first 45 minutes of play scoreless as the Privateers outshot the Gryphons by an 11-5 margin, while taking eight corner kicks to Sarah Lawrence's one. The game advanced to the second half with the game still tied.
 
It took just over three minutes into the second period for the Privateers to break the drought as Avitto took a strong shot towards the right post after receiving a pass from Woods to open up the scoring. Maritime found the back of the net once again as it was Woods, who scored her fourth goal of the season off a pass from Burns to make the score 2-0 with 50:44 gone by in the match.
 
Maritime continued its offensive attack as Avitto was vying for her second goal of the period that was block in front by the defense. The ball then bounced towards Burns at the left post, Burns then battled the goalkeeper to put the ball away for the third score of the night.
 
Throughout the remainder of regulation, the Privateers fended off any offensive burst by Sarah Lawrence as the Gryphons recorded five shots and three corner kicks through the final 11 minutes of the contest but were unable to break the shutout.
 
Maritime ended the contest by outshooting Sarah Lawrence by a 19-15 margin overall, while also taking 11 corner kicks compared to five taken by the Gryphons. Hoar ended the match with eight saves to record the victory, while suffering the loss for Sarah Lawrence was Noelle Clark.
 
Maritime (4-5-1, 1-1 Skyline) will return to non-conference play with a quick turnaround as the Privateers will host Medgar Evers at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, live stats of the match will be available on MaritimeAthletics.com.
 
Sarah Lawrence (2-4, 0-1 Skyline) drops its inaugural Skyline Conference match, and will also resume non-conference action on the road this Sunday, when the team travels to take on Lehman at 10:30 a.m.
