Men's Lacrosse Preview: Maritime Returns Home for Date with Mount St. Mary

The Maritime men's lacrosse team returns to Skyline Conference play on Wednesday evening when the Privateers play host to the Knights of Mount St. Mary for a 7 p.m. start on Reinhart Field.

LAST GAME RECAP
Maritime enters off of a loss to cross-sound rival Merchant Marine on Monday evening by the score of 17-2. The Privateers got goals from senior James D'Amico (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) and sophomore Jonathan Strezenec (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun). For Strezenec, it was the first goal of his career.
 
In goal, sophomore Mike Arnold (Plainedge, N.Y./Plainedge) picked up 10 saves through the first three quarters of play. Freshman Kieran Clark (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) collected two saves through the final period. On faceoffs, sophomore Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) went 10-for-21 on draws while picking up a team-best seven ground balls.
 
SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS
Mount St. Mary comes in at 3-6 on the season with loses in its last two contests. On March 29 the Knights fell to Montclair State by a 27-5 score, and more recently lost to Farmingdale by a 16-4 margin.
 
In its most recent contest, the Knights got goals from Shaun McMahon, Joseph Rizzotti, John Grillo, and Sebastian Cina, Jr. While in goal, Connor Haran played the majority of the game and made nine saves through 55:33.
 
On the season, Rizzotti leads Mount St. Mary with nine goals, while C.J. Cardo is second on the team with eight goals. Jake Robinson is tied for third on the team with seven goals, but has a team-best 13 assists and 20 points. Stephen White handles the faceoff duties for the Knights and is 62-for-157 on draws this season.
 
In goal, Haran has played all but 15 minutes this season and has registered 119 saves and allowed 125 goals on the season. He has a 14.31 goals against average and a .488 save percentage.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES
The Privateers are 2-1 in their three head-to-head matchups with the young Mount St. Mary program, as the Privateers picked up wins in the first two games before falling last season by a 12-10 score.
 
In last season's matchup, Tom Kelly and Matt Messina led the unit with three goals each, while Kevin Winter (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) added two of his own. Winter also added three assists, while Kelly picked up a pair of helpers.
 
In goal, Nick Barbuto (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) played the entire game and picked up six saves and also picked up four ground balls in the loss.

UP NEXT
After tonight's contest against Mount St. Mary, the Privateers will head on the road for its final road contest of the regular season. Maritime will travel to Montclair State on Wednesday, April 16 for a 7 p.m. start against the Red Hawks.
 
Mount St. Mary will return home for its next contest on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 when the Stockton Ospreys visit Newburgh, N.Y. for a Skyline Conference battle.
