Men’s Lacrosse Overwhelmed by Montclair State in 2014 Road Finale

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (April 16, 2014) – The Maritime men's lacrosse team ended the road portion of its 2014 season with a loss to the Montclair State Red Hawks on Wednesday evening at Sprague Field by the score of 20-2.
 
The Privateers won the opening faceoff and turned the ball over under 30 second into the period. Montclair State jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead just 1:11 into the contest off a pass from behind the goal. Throughout the remainder of the quarter, the Red Hawks added 10 more goals to take an 11-0 advantage.
 
Maritime's best chance in the opening half came as junior Neil Nembhard (Commack, N.Y./Commack) took a low skip-shot that rang off the post with 4:45 left in the first quarter.
 
In the second quarter, the Red Hawks added seven more tallies to take an 18-0 lead into the halftime break. Through the first 30 minutes of play, sophomore Mike Arnold (Plainedge, N.Y./Plainedge) registered four saves.
 
The third quarter saw freshman Kieran Clark (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) take over for Maritime in goal and also saw him stop the first two shots he faced on the evening.
 
After the Red Hawks scored the opening goal of the half, Maritime then responded several minutes later with a goal of its own as senior Andrew Scalesi (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield), took a shot from 10-yards out with 4:01 left in the third period to break the shutout. Montclair State scored once more to regain its 19-goal lead.
 
The fourth quarter saw sophomore Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) collect his eighth goal of the season on a bouncing shot from the right side of the cage to give Maritime it's second goal of the contest with 6:12 left in regulation to make the score 20-2.
 
Taking the loss was Arnold (4-8) after making four saves through the opening half. Clark was credited with six saves on the evening while playing the second half of the game. Freshman Alex Haim (Youngstown, N.Y./Lewiston Porter) also came on for a few minutes of work towards the end of the game and did not make a save in the final 2:11 regulation.
 
On draws, Hayes led the team going 19-for-23 while also holding the team lead with 14 ground balls. Leading the defense was sophomore Jonathan Strezenec (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) with a pair of caused turnovers.
 
Maritime (5-10, 1-4 Skyline) will wrap up the 2014 season with a home contest a week from today against Mount St. Vincent on Reinhart Field at 7 p.m. on April 23. Montclair State (12-1, 5-0 Skyline) will take on Albright in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. before wrapping up its league slate with a contest against Kean on April 23.
