Men's Lacrosse Preview: Maritime Takes on Western Connecticut in Wednesday Evening Showdown

LAST GAME RECAP
On Saturday, the Privateers opened up their home schedule against Shenandoah on Reinhart Field and fell for the third time this season by the score of 10-5.
 
Shenandoah took an early 2-0 lead, but freshman Zachary Pace (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) cut the deficit in half with a man-up goal late in the opening period. The Hornets scored six of the game's next seven goals to take an 8-2 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
In the fourth, seniors Dylan Larmony (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview JFK), Paul Grubb (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) and Andrew Scalesi (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) found the back of the net but it was not enough for Maritime as Shenandoah picked up the victory. In goal, sophomore Mike Arnold (Plainedge, N.Y./Plainedge) made a career-high 19 saves while suffering the hard luck loss.
 
SUCCESS FOR HAYES PAYS OFF
With his perfect 16-for-16 on faceoffs on Saturday against Shenandoah, coupled with his 13-of-18 success rate against FDU-Florham on Wednesday evening, sophomore Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) was selected to the Skyline Conference Honor Roll on Monday afternoon.
 
For the season Hayes is now 50-for-70 (71.4%) on faceoffs, while also picking up 42 ground balls this season including a team-high 12 against Shenandoah.
 
SCOUTING THE COLONIALS
Western Connecticut has played three games thus far this season and are 1-2 on the season. In their last game, the Colonials fell to the Cardinals of Plattsburgh by the score of 15-8 at home.
 
After tying the game at one apiece, the Cardinals rattled off nine unanswered goals to take a 10-1 lead in the early stages of the third quarter. In the latter stages of the game, the Colonials outscored Plattsburgh 7-5 but it was not enough as the team lost by seven goals.
 
Ryan Foster led the team with three goals, while Nick Foley and John Foristall had two goals each. Kevin Seery made 16 saves in goal while playing all 60 minutes in the losing effort.
 
Foster leads the team with eight goals and 10 points this season, while Nate Wilson is second on the team with seven goals. Zach Bartlett leads the team defensively with nine caused turnovers, while Ryan Caldwell is 44-for-76 (57.9%) on faceoffs this season.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES
Maritime is 3-4 against Western Connecticut State since the 2007 season, including three straight loses to the Colonials.
 
Last season, Maritime fell at home to Western Connecticut by the score of 16-5 on February 27. Maritime got five goals from five different players including current seniors James D'Amico (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.), Dylan Larmony (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview JFK) and Andrew Scalesi (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield).
 
Mike Arnold (Plainedge, N.Y./Plainedge) played in relief last season while making two saves in 12:30 worth of in-game time against Western Connecticut.

UP NEXT
Maritime will travel to Castine, Maine for a pair of games in the Maritime Cup against Mass. Maritime and Maine Maritime on Saturday and Sunday respectively. The Privateers play the Buccaneers on Saturday at 1 p.m. followed by a 12 p.m. start the next day against the host Mariners.
 
Western Connecticut will continue its three-game home stand with a matchup against the Vassar Brewers in non-conference play on Friday, March 14 at 4:30 p.m.
