THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 26, 2013) – The Maritime men's lacrosse team (0-1) will be playing host to non-conference opponent Western Connecticut State (0-0) in the Privateers' 2013 home-opener on Wednesday night, Feb. 27. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.

Inside The Series
Maritime has taken on WestConn each season since 2007 and the record is dead-even at 3-3. The Privateers lost the first game back in 2007 and then won the next three, before losing in 2011 and 2012. Under head coach Daniel Lawrence, the squad is 1-2 against the Colonials.

Last Time The Teams Met
On March 9, 2012, the Privateers travelled up to Danbury, Conn., and lost to Western Connecticut, 10-1, despite the score being just 1-0 in favor of WestConn at halftime. The lone goal of the day for Maritime came from the stick of sophomore Brennen Siele (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor). Then-junior Nick Barbuto (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) recorded 21 saves in just over 55 minutes of action.

For the Colonials, senior Ryan Gillis scored a game-high five goals, while sophomore Ryan Foster contributed with two goals and two assists. Starting goalie, senior Tyler Martone earned the victory with 10 saves in 55 minutes of action.

A Closer Look At The Privateers
Despite a strong second-half, Maritime dropped its season-opening game at Vassar College on Saturday, 15-9, to fall to 0-1 on the young season. Junior James D'Amico (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) registered three goals and two assists for the Privateers, while classmate Mike Johnson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) recorded two goals and one assist. In goal, Nick Barbuto (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) played the first half and made seven saves, while suffering the loss. Seniors Joe Villarreal (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) and Dylan Larmony (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview JFK) (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Planview JFK) both picked up a team-high six groundballs and Villarreal was also 7-for-11 from the faceoff-X.

Scouting The Western Connecticut State Colonials
Wednesday's game will be the first of the season for WestConn, who is led by eighth-year head coach Jason Ouellet. The Colonials compiled a 9-7 record during the 2012 campaign, including a 4-3 mark in Little East Conference action, which was good for a third place finish in the league. WCSU lost to #6 seed Plymouth St., 9-5, in the opening round of the Little East Tournament.

WestConn lost its leading scorer from last year, Ryan Gillis (40G+15A=55P), but is returning the second-leading scorer, junior Ryan Foster, who ended 2012 with 30 goals and 14 assists for 44 points. Sophomore Ryan Arconti was the team's go-to faceoff man in 2012 and compiled a 67.3 faceoff percentage while leading the team with 70 ground balls, while senior defender Brandon Marszalek ended his junior year with 56 groundballs.

The Colonials also lost their starting goalie to graduation, as Tyler Martone earned every decision for WCSU in 2012, compiling a 7.95 goals against average and making 191 saves. WestConn will look to his primary backups last year, sophomores Kevin Seery and Chris Alexander.
