Men’s Swimming Topples Mount St. Mary Friday Night; Women Fall To The Knights

        NEWBURGH, N.Y. (Dec. 6, 2013) – The Maritime men's swimming team defeated Skyline Conference opponent Mount St. Mary, 137-67, Friday night up at the Knights' Kaplan Center. The Privateers women lost to the Knights, 131-68.
 
        The men had four swimmers that picked up two victories apiece on the night, led by freshman Robert Lewis (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown), who won two individual races, both distance events – the 1000 freestyle (11:28.62) and the 500 free (5:34.80). Sophomore Matthew Cannon (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) led off the meet-opening 200 medley relay team that touched first in 1:47.12 and also won the 200 free with a time of 1:58.95.
 
        Freshman Craig Lyon (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) was also a part of the 200 medley relay team, while also winning the 100 breaststroke event later in the meet in 1:09.97 and freshman Jonathan Murray (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg) (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg) was part of both the 200 MR and the 200 free relay that ended the night with a win in 1:38.37.
 
        Six other Privateers earned victories on the night: sophomore Brendan Erskine (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) won the 200 individual medley in 2:14.06, junior Daniel Hemmer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) won the 100 butterfly in 57.45, junior Collin McNamara (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) won the 100 free in 51.04 and sophomore Patrick Brandow (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville), freshman Scott Armstrong (Rotterdam, N.Y./Mohonasen) (Rotterdam, N.Y./Mohonasen) and senior John Crawford (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) were also on the 200 free relay team that touched first along with Murray.
 
        On the women's side, the Privateers won just two events on the night. Sophomore Hayley Hobbs (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) was a part of both wins, coming out victorious in the 100 fly in 1:08.00 while also being a part of the 200 free relay team that touched first in 1:51.07 along with junior Mariel Vanderlinden (Woodside, N.Y./Dominican Academy) and freshmen Treasa Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) and Danielle Leahy (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Cocoa Beach) (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Cocoa Beach).
 
        The Maritime women also nearly won the first event of the night, the 200 medley relay, but the Knights' out-touched the Privateers by the slimmest of margins, one-hundredth of a second. That team consisted of Vanderlinden, sophomore Emma Crandall (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield), Hobbs and Murphy.
 
        The teams will return to action in the New Year, when they will travel to northern New Jersey to take on non-conference opponent Ramapo College on Tuesday, January 21, 2014. First race is scheduled for 6 p.m.
