Plattsburgh Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Privateers Friday Night

        THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 2, 2012) – The Maritime men's lacrosse team lost to Plattsburgh St., 19-3, Friday night at Reinhart Field. The loss drops the Privateers' record to 0-2 on the season, while the Cardinals improve to 1-0 in their first game of the year.
 
        Plattsburgh scored early and often, tallying two goals just six seconds apart to make the score 2-0 44 seconds in. The lead built up to 4-0 before Maritime got on the board on a goal by a defenseman. Senior Steven Tonn (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) battled from the sideline into the middle of the field and ripped a shot past Plattsburgh's Gordie Gehring at 6:01.
 
        The Cardinals scored 13 straight goals over the next two-plus quarters, before the Privateers broke through at 8:33 of the fourth quarter on a goal by freshman Daniel Ahern (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Dominic) (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Dominic), assisted by classmate James Sullivan (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) (East Northport, N.Y./Northport). Junior Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) then tallied a goal just over a minute and a half later for his team-leading third tally of the game. Plattsburgh scored the final two goals of the game to close out the scoring.
 
        Maritime junior goalie Nick Barbuto (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) got the starting nod and played three quarters, making 18 saves. For Plattsburgh, junior Gordie Gehring played three and a half quarters and made six saves.
 
        Barbuto was the team-leader in ground balls with five, while sophomore Mike Johnson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) had three GBs. Freshman TJ Bonci (Eastchester, N.Y./Iona Prep) (Eastchester, N.Y./Iona Prep.) had a team-high two caused turnovers.
 
        For the Cardinals, Joey Kramer had a game-high seven point with six goals and one assist, while three other players had multiple-goal games. Nick Travers had a hat trick with three goals and Brett McClelland and Brendan Damm each had two goals.
 
        Maritime returns to action on Sunday, March 4, when the squad plays host to Maine Maritime. Game time is scheduled for noon at Reinhart Field.
