PURCHASE, N.Y. (Nov. 12, 2012) – The Maritime swimming teams opened the 2012-13 season at Skyline Conference opponent Purchase College on Monday night at the Panther's Purchase Pool. The men won by the score of 121-65, while the women lost to the Panthers, 111-89.
The men finished in first place in every single race and were led by three swimmers that won all three of their events: senior
Joe Tucker (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun), sophomore
Collin McNamara (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) and freshman
Brendan Erskine (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy).
They were all a part of the 200-yard free relay team with sophomore
Matthew Collins (Brooklyn, N.Y./Townsend Harris) (Brooklyn, N.Y./Townsend Harris) that ended the day by finishing first with a time of 1:51.45. Erskine and McNamara were also on the 200-yard medley relay team with sophomore
Zach Haughn (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep.) (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep.) and senior
Dominic Pereira (Jacksonville, Fla./Fletcher) (Jacksonville, Fla./Fletcher) that placed first in 1:49.68. Erskine won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:11.06 and McNamara won the 50-yard free with a time of 23.24. Tucker won two individual events, the 200-yard free (1:58.81) and the 100-yard free (53.12).
On the women's side, the Privateers won three events and two swimmers had first-place finishes: sophomore
Mariel Vanderlinden (Woodside, N.Y./Dominican Academy) and freshman
Hayley Hobbs (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy). Hobbs was the first Maritime swimmer to win on the day, touching first in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:06.93. Vanderlinden was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:10.97. Both were on the 200-yard free relay team with senior
Ariel Beebe (Morian, N.Y./Morian Central) (Morian, N.Y./Morian Central) and sophomore
Charlotte Acklin (Lewes, Del./West Broward (Fla.)) (Lewes, Del./West Broward) that won in 1:55.17, the only team to finish under two minutes in the event.
The men's and women's squads are back in action tomorrow night, Wednesday, Nov. 14, when they will play host to non-conference opponent Lehman College. The meet will feature both swimming and diving and will begin at 6 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Pool.
