THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 9, 2011) – The Maritime men's lacrosse team fell to the visiting Wesleyan Cardinals, 9-2, Wednesday night at Reinhart Field. The loss drops the Privateers' record to 0-3 overall on the season, while Wesleyan improves to 2-0.
The score was close throughout the opening three quarters, as the Privateers were trailing just 2-0 at halftime. The Cardinals tallied a goal in each of the first two periods, but it could've been worse as goalie senior Keith Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) stood tall to make nine saves before the half.
After Wesleyan scored a goal at 9:45 of the third quarter to go up 3-0, senior Michael Hanratty (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) found the back of the net off a pass by classmate Andrew Marklin (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) to cut the deficit to 3-1. The Cards added one more before the period ended, then two more quick to start the fourth to grab a 6-1 lead.
Sophomore Kevin Winter (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) then scored just 24 seconds later, at 8:24, to make it 6-2. However, Wesleyan finished strong by scoring three unanswered goals to solidify the win.
Messina ended the night with 17 saves, while Cardinals' goalie Grant Covington registered eight in the winning effort. Defensively, the Privateers were led by Messina with four ground balls and senior TJ Beaudette (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial), who recorded three caused turnovers.
Maritime returns to action on Saturday, when the squad plays to Plattsburgh State. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
