THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 3, 2011) – The Maritime men's swimming and diving team defeated Mount Saint Mary, 132-54, Thursday night at the Riesenberg Hall Pool, but the women fell to the Blue Knights, 146-56, in the final head-to-head meet of the season. With the victory, the men's head-to-head record finishes at 7-2 overall (3-0 Skyline), while the women fall to 3-8 (1-3 Skyline). Mount Saint Mary men fall to 10-4 (2-1 Skyline) and the women improve to 9-5 (3-0 Skyline).
The Privateer men won all but two races on the night, as sophomore Joseph Tucker (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun ) led the way with three first-place finishes. He started off the night as the fourth leg of the 200-yard medley relay with classmate Leonard Hudson (Freeport, Bahamas/Jack Hayward) and juniors Ryan Luchsinger (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) and Jonathan DaSilva (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) and the group finished with a time of 1:49.84. Individually, Tucker won the 50-yard free in 23.39 and the 100 free in 52.21.
Hudson and DaSilva also won their individual races, as Hudson touched first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:22.15 and DaSilva won the 100 butterfly in 56.90. Three other swimmers won individual races: junior Jonathan Lotz (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) won the 200 free in 1:55.33, senior Brian Day (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) touched first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.55 and freshman Dominic Pereira (Jacksonville, Fla./Fletcher) won the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.80. The 200 free relay team of sophomores John Covell (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake ), Kyle Harakal (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs ) and Arthur Seaman (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) and senior Joseph Bosch (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) touched first with a time of 1:43.27.
On the women's side, only junior Laura Palino (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) won a race, the 100 yard butterfly, in 1:22.51. The Privateers recorded four second place finish, with senior Caroline Hickey (New Orleans, La./DeLasalle) and sophomore Ariel Beebe (Morian, N.Y./Morian Central) accounting for three of them, including the 200 medley relay.
The Maritime men's and women's swimming team will now prepare for the Skyline Conference Championship meet, to be held on the campus of SUNY College of Old Westbury this Saturday, Feb. 5. The men will be looking to capture their fourth straight Skyline championship. First race is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Old Westbury Aquatic Center.
