THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Dec. 1, 2011) – The Maritime men's swimming team defeated NCAA Division-II opponent Queens College, 160-116, Wednesday night over at the Knights pool on their campus in Flushing, N.Y. At the same meet, the Privateer women lost to Queens by the score of 154-118. The Maritime men improve to 4-1 on the season, while the women fall to 1-4. The Queens men fall to 1-2 and the women improve to 1-4.
The men recorded nine first place finishes on the night, including three by freshman
Collin McNamara (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) in the 50-free (22.70), the 100-free (50.74) and as part of the 200-free relay team (1:34.45). Senior captain
Jonathan DaSilva (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) and sophomore diver
Jeff Markarian (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) both had two wins apiece as DaSilva touched first in the 50-butterfly (24.99) and the 100-butterfly (54.84), while Markarian won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions.
On the women's side, freshman
Mariel Vanderlinden (Woodside, N.Y./Dominican Academy) was part of both of the Privateers two first-place finishes on the night. She led off the 200-medley relay team that touched first in 2:09.60 and also won the 200-individual medley with a time of 2:32.49. Accompanying Vanderlinen on the 200-medley relay team was sophomore

The Maritime men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to action next Wednesday, Dec. 7, when they travel up to Newburgh, N.Y., to take on Skyline Conference foe Mount Saint Mary. First race is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the Blue Knights' Kaplan Center Pool.
