NEWBURGH, N.Y. (Nov. 6, 2011) – The Maritime men's swimming team won the Mount Saint Mary Invitational on Sunday. Due to the winter storm last weekend, the event was rescheduled to today, but only two teams were able to take part on the men's side, with the home Blue Knights taking on the Privateers. Maritime finished with 824 points to Mount's 269. On the women's side the Privateers finished third with 228 points behind Mount Saint Mary (619) and St. Joseph's (299).
The Maritime men had 11 first-place finishes in the 14 events at the invite. They were led by senior
Ryan Luchsinger (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai), who won a team-high four races: two individual in the 100 free (51.15) and 50 free (23.45) and two in relay teams in the 200 medley relay (1:48.57) and the 200 free relay (1:35.51). Freshman
Collin McNamara (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) (Somerville, N.J./St. Joseph) and senior
Jonathan DaSilva (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) each had three wins apiece, while sophomore
John Crawford (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and senior
William DeFries (Salem, S.C./D.W.Daniel) (Salem, S.C./D.W.Daniel) rounded out the Privateers' multi-event winners as they touched first in two events each.
On the women's side, senior
Leighahn Ferrari (Copiague, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) (Copiague, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) placed the highest for Maritime, coming in second place in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 28.55. She also finished third in the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay, while sophomores
Ariel Beebe (Morian, N.Y./Morian Central) (Morian, N.Y./Morian Central) and
Kwantisha Lozada (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) each had a third-place finish.
The swimming and diving teams return to action thi Thursday, Nov. 10, when the squads play host to Skyline Conference-foe Old Westbury. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Pool.
